Many people don’t take too much time when thinking about what they are going to name their pets. They try to make it as simple as possible and some kind of cute name. They base it off of their color or one thing they did one time. It doesn’t take too much of a thought process. Many people even let their kids name the cat which usually results in a very simple name for a child to remember. If you are one of those people that have named their cat Snuggles, Gold, Cuddles, or Chocolate, you may notice your cat does not respond to their name.

Dr. Uri Burstyn, a vet, and a cat guru tells us on his Youtube channel that cat’s ears are extremely sensitive especially to high pitched noises. This makes the cats especially skilled at catching their prey. The animals they chase such as rats, mice, and other small animals make very high pitched noises. This makes it easier for them to catch it. So why don’t they respond to their own names if their hearing is so great? They might not be ignoring you. They really might not hear you.

Because they hear high pitched noises better, they might not respond to a name with a lower pitch such as Snuggles. It is too low for them to hear or pay any attention to. They won’t respond to it. However, if their name has a higher pitch to it, they are more likely to respond. “EE” sounds are likely to get their attention. It has a higher pitch to it. A name such as Sparky, Eevee, or Lacey has a higher pitch to it. They will be able to hear it better which in turn gets their attention.

People do this subconsciously many times as well. It is natural to get a higher tone of voice when trying to get a cat’s attention. People tend to talk to their cats in a high pitched voice. They probably realized this got their cat’s attention more often than not in the past. This is because cats can hear you much better when you talk to them in a high pitched voice. If you want to get their attention, just make a high pitched noise. They are extremely likely to look your way.

What is your cat’s name? Do you call them something else that seems to get their attention better? Let us know what you think!
