When it comes to finding fame in Hollywood, many people need to be talented in at least one field and have some type of connection. Others rely on their unique and incredibly interesting personalities and life stories to help them resonate more with their targeted audience. Woody Harrelson has both talent and a very unexpected life story that has led him to become the star he is today.
Harrelson was born on July 23, 1961, in Midland, Texas. His father was a convicted hitman by the name of Charles Voyde Harrelson. Harrelson also grew up with two brothers named Jordan and Brett, and the latter went on to become an actor.
Harrelson himself has shown that he truly cares about social issues and has been very vocal about his activism, although it has also sometimes gotten him into trouble. However, what most people know Harrelson for is his work as an actor and playwright. He has won numerous prestigious awards for his work over the years, from starring in the sitcom “Cheers” to making his way to films such as “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “The Edge of Seventeen” and “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Harrelson has overcome several obstacles along the way to stardom, and he is still incredibly popular in the industry today. On top of that, the star has a flourishing personal life as he has been happily married to his wife, Laurie Louie, since 2008. While Harrelson has always been a rebel at heart, it seems like he’s found a way to balance this with his roles as a husband and father, all thanks to his wife.

Many people know Harrelson for his work in both films and television and as a playwright. However, he initially got his start by showing off his Elvis Presley impression. During an interview with James Corden in 2019, Harrelson said he got discovered in high school by doing his impression in front of many people.
He went on to find fame early on for his portrayal of Woody Boyd in the sitcom “Cheers,” which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award. Speaking with TODAY, Harrelson talked about how he was a bit rambunctious during this time and had “loose morals” as a partier. However, he continued to show off his amazing skills as an actor, and his career further progressed as the years went by, leading to a stream of awards for successful roles.
Nowadays, many people recognize Harrelson for his roles in “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Natural Born Killers” and “The Hunger Games” franchise. However, he had to overcome many obstacles to get where he is today.
Harrelson grew up poor as his family relied solely on his mother’s wages since his father, Charles, was a convicted hitman. He also encountered legal troubles later in life. He told the Hollywood Reporter that he “had a lot of rage” and “real emotional problems” when he was younger. As he grew older, he engaged in bar fights and chose to “live on the edge.”
However, he has since changed. Harrelson said:
“You rarely see a person change. Their personality stays very similar, unless it gets more cynical. But rarely do you see a person who is uncomfortable or unhappy transform and metamorphose into a happy person, unless they have some life-threatening illness and manage to overcome it. But I would say that I have changed, and pretty late into my life.”

Nowadays, Harrelson is known for his work as an activist and actor. He also has a beautiful family. He met his current wife, Laura Louie, in 1987 when she worked as his personal assistant on “Cheers,” according to the Associated Press. The pair live with their three daughters in Maui, Hawaii, in a sustainable community of about 200 people, according to SF Gate.
However, marriage wasn’t always in the cards for the actor. “I never believed in the concept of (marriage),” he explained. “I just never believed that it made any sense, this long-term monogamy thing that humans do.” He equated it to being in a “cage,” so he was “incapable of long-term relationships.” Harrelson revealed, “Then I met my wife.”
Speaking with Esquire about what he’s learned over the years, Harrelson talked about his wife and kids. He said the “best thing” he has going for him is “parenthood.” Harrelson added:
“I remember my daughter Deni coming along, and she was so pure and caring of everybody and everything. And somehow, this little being managed to get around all the obstacles -- the gun turrets, the walls, the moats, the sentries -- that were wrapped around my heart. My heart at that time needed her.”
Speaking about his wife, he simply shared, “Laura – I don't know, I just, I love her.”
While Harrelson has certainly changed over the years, it doesn’t seem like Louie has completely tamed him. He explained, “I got the most amazing wife I could imagine. But did marriage calm me down? I don’t think anything will ever calm me down.”
