Ever find yourself arguing with your partner about housework? Whose turn is it to do the dishes tonight, or whose turn is it to take the car in for service? Do you feel like your partner isn’t doing as much of the housework? Fortunately, ladies, there’s a new study to back up your feelings.

A study by experts at University College London found that just one in fourteen couples equally divide household chores. One in fourteen! That’s amazing. They also discovered that women typically do three times as much housework as men do, even when working a full-time job. Think about it. Do you come home from work to a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, and then feel like you have to wash them? That’s pretty stressful, especially if you’ve been working hard all day.

The study authors say it’s not because women want to do more chores. It’s simply following gender stereotypes that were established by previous generations. We all know the classic 1950s image of a housewife doing the cleaning while their husband works. Even now that the majority of women work full-time jobs outside the home, we’re still following that same concept.

Professor Anne McMunn, one of the authors of the study, says that improving parental leave policies and closing the gender wage gap could make a positive impact. It’s also important to have open and honest conversations with your partner. The next time you find yourself picking up the vacuum cleaner, ask your partner if he wants to take over.
