Woman's Fiancé Asks Her To Pay Half The Price Of Her Engagement Ring After He Proposes To Her

The dynamics between two people who are in a relationship have changed in recent years. Dating alone has evolved in so many ways over the past few decades. The courting process, for one, has become more casual between two people. Of course, there are still those who follow the traditional ways of courting depending on one’s culture. Then again, the presence of dating apps has changed the game for everyone who wants to enter the dating scene. In the past, men were expected to pay the bill during first dates. Now, it’s a two-way street for a lot of couples. But again, it depends on the setup between a couple. If they mutually agree to something, then there’s nothing wrong with different approaches.

But what if a man proposes to his girlfriend? Should the girlfriend pay half the price of the engagement ring her fiancé bought for her? Well, that’s also one of the questions that have been lingering in the minds of some people on the internet after the exact same scenario took place in Taiwan in December 2022.

While weddings and other marriage-related plans are some of the most important instances when couples usually save up money to split the cost, the same can’t be said about buying an engagement ring where the man usually pays using money from his own pocket.

However, this wasn’t the case for a couple from Taiwan, after a woman took to a platform called Dcard to share her experience after her longtime boyfriend proposed to her. Guess what? Her boyfriend asked her to split the cost of the engagement ring between them.

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman had been in a relationship with her boyfriend for four years and respected his attitude toward money since the start.

But it wasn’t the case this time around as the man told the woman as soon as they came home after his proposal in front of their friends that his fiancée should transfer half the amount of the engagement ring – which cost about $5,000 – to his account.

The man pointed out that they should split the cost of the ring because that should be the case for two people who are in a marriage. That didn’t sit well with the woman and eventually affected their relationship.

The South China Morning Post also reported that the couple had gone through a rough patch following the incident. While the man no longer talked about his plans to split the money, the woman had decided not to wear her engagement ring ever since.

Although the woman’s post generated mixed reactions from people on the internet, a lot of them mostly sided with her. There were those who said that the woman should not bother paying half the cost of the ring because it was the man who picked it – including the price. Others, on the other hand, pointed out that if the man can’t spend money on her right now, she might have to deal with other expenses later on.

"Men who can't afford to spend money on you really don't want you in the first place," one person said.

"He picked the diamond ring, he picked the price, you had absolutely no choice in the matter," another person said.

"Will you have to pay for the birth of a child in the future? The cost of maternity check-ups, hospitalization, and monthly fees? And what about the discomfort of pregnancy, body transformations, labor pains, and post-natal breastfeeding? Will he convert it into cash for you?" another person wrote.
