Many kids grow up with a passion to one day land their dream job. For some, this could mean becoming a firefighter or a teacher. For others, this might lead to something more creative, like a writer or video producer. Whatever it may be, people are typically encouraged to pursue their passions and find a way to do whatever it is that makes them happy – even if sometimes that means the job is a bit on the unusual side.

It may sound like a joke, but professional cuddlers are quickly becoming a legitimate profession for many people. Meet Robin Marie, a self-described cuddlist in the Kansas City area in Kansas. For a fee, these cuddlists will meet with clients to deliver cuddles, touches, hand-holding, and other platonic touches. Talk about a cushy job!

This non-sexual touch therapy can last anywhere from just a few minutes to all the way overnight, depending on the needs of the client. Marie is a big believer in the power of touch. It is this belief that led her to pursue a career in professional cuddling. Marie said that it is natural to want to be touched and that engaging in these sessions can prove to be quite therapeutic for many people.

She became a professional cuddler back in 2018 and has continued to love cuddling others and helping those who need some extra affection. Becoming a professional cuddler has helped Marie and her clients become kinder and more compassionate people.

Despite what you might think about the seriousness of the job, cuddlists undergo a process of certification. The organization, Cuddlist, offers a certification program that lasts approximately four months.

In addition to her cuddling certification, Marie also boasts a master’s degree in counseling psychology, according to her website, enabling her to relate better to her clients and their personal needs. She further explained:

“What I love about cuddling is how it allows us to slow down, tune in, and be present to the moment. To be held by another human being with kindness and compassion is a profound, affirming experience.”

Marie also claimed that there are health benefits from “sharing platonic touch,” such as an increase in oxytocin – commonly referred to as the love hormone – as well as an increase in “a sense of meaningful connection.” The cuddlist added:

“When you’re needing comforting touch due to life’s stressors, touch hunger, or touch aversion (due to trauma), professional cuddling can take you to a higher level of self-awareness and self-care than you’ve ever known. “

Speaking with Inside Edition, Marie said that most people have touch deprivation unless they are an infant or young child, or are in a romantic relationship. She claimed her cuddling methods are helpful, and the entire experience is “very rewarding.”

Marie follows a strict protocol when screening clients. Not only does she request identification, but she also makes her clients sign an agreement outlining the personal boundaries of the sessions.

Although some clients want to cuddle, others just hire Marie for the sense of companionship. Many people are surprised to learn that Marie earns $80 per hour for this job. Marie believes that the profession will become more common in the future.
