Many heroes remark on how surprised they were to be put in a position where they had an opportunity to make an important difference in someone's life. A person can be having a completely ordinary day when, out of the blue, they have to decide whether or not they're going to go out on a limb to help a stranger in their time of desperate need.

The story presented here is one of these unexpected types of incidents that can transform an average person into an unlikely hero.

When Rebecca Montano, a cashier at a Colorado supermarket, went into work one fateful day she had no idea of the alarming event that was about to unfold right in front of her. A young mom with a baby in her arms came up to the counter where Rebecca was carrying out her work responsibilities.

Rebecca noticed as the woman gave her a friendly greeting and then placed a drink on the counter that something was very out of the ordinary and troubling about the way the woman looked.

That's when Rebecca followed her gut instinct and reached out and grabbed the baby from the woman's arms.

Normally, snatching a baby from the arms of a complete stranger would be completely uncalled for and inappropriate. In this circumstance, however, Rebecca was seeking to protect the baby. The woman collapsed onto the floor just seconds after this quick-thinking cashier had whisked the little infant out of harm's way.

You're probably wondering what exactly caused the woman to fall down. It was an epileptic seizure. Rebecca quickly called for the paramedics who came to the scene right away to give the woman much-needed treatment.

She woke up without any lasting damage other than soreness from her fall.

The police officer who came to the scene had nothing but admiration and respect for Rebecca. He remarked, "Thanks to her excellent judgment, both baby and mother were safe."

After she had had time to come out of her seizure and regroup, the baby's mother was also quick to give thanks for Rebecca's compassionate actions. Rebecca explained to reporters that because she has her own granddaughter she was alert to the child's need to be protected during the seizure.

Epileptic people suffer from chronic seizures which recur for reasons that aren't completely understood. The seizures can range from mild to severe and their frequency also varies from patient to patient. People who suffer from this serious condition can often be limited in their everyday activities.
