A 53-year-old French woman named Anne became the target of an intricate scam that deceived her into believing she was in a romantic relationship with Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, ultimately costing her approximately $856,000.
Various French television reports revealed the elaborate scheme not only duped her financially but also contributed to the collapse of her marriage. Anne, however, wasn’t the only victim of such catfishing scams involving a celebrity.
In September 2024, The Guardian reported that Spanish fraudsters impersonating the actor scammed two women out of approximately $348,000. Spanish authorities then arrested five suspects, confiscated several items, and recovered some stolen funds.
In a separate incident, Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell alerted fans in December 2024 that he would “never” solicit money after discovering a fake Facebook account was impersonating him.
This account responded to comments on his official page, urging fans to contact it privately. During an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, he emphasized: “I stress so often, I make videos saying I will not contact you; I will never ask you for money.”
In January 2025, The Times in the United Kingdom and French news outlets AFP and BFM TV reported that Anne had spoken with French television network TF1. However, the network removed the interview from its website following an overwhelming wave of online mockery stemming from her story.
Anne recounted that the scam began in February 2023 when she received a Facebook message from someone claiming to be Pitt’s mother who told her that “her son needed someone like me.”
However, this message marked the start of her entanglement in a deceitful scheme.
Despite her initial doubts, Anne maintained contact with “Pitt’s mother” before receiving a message from someone impersonating the actor. Anne shared:
“At first I said to myself that it was fake, that it’s ridiculous,” adding, “But I’m not used to social media and I didn’t really understand what was happening to me.”
The scammer used AI-generated videos and images to convince her he was the real Brad Pitt, initiating an online romance in which he professed his love for her. Communicating with her exclusively via text, the scammer began to “gift” Anne lavish items, claiming she needed to cover the customs fees for the packages. She first lost $9,630 this way.
The scammer even proposed marriage, leading Anne to divorce her wealthy husband. The Pitt impersonator later claimed he needed financial assistance for kidney cancer treatment, stating his funds were frozen due to a divorce settlement with his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie.
According to a report from BFM TV, Anne reflected:
“There are so few men who write you this kind of thing,” and added: “I liked the man I was talking to. He knew how to talk to women; it was always very well done.”
After leaving her husband, Anne transferred more than $856,000 of her settlement to the scammer, only to realize it was all a ruse when she saw reports in the media about the real Brad Pitt entering into a new relationship with Ines De Ramon, Paul Wesley’s ex-wife. With the jig up, she filed a lawsuit, leading to a police inquiry.
In the wake of the scam, Anne focused on rebuilding her life. She said she went public with her story with the hope her experience would raise awareness about the dangers of deepfakes and artificial intelligence, which can be used to manipulate and deceive individuals.
