Woman Criticized For Being ‘Disrespectful’ By Wearing A White Dress To Her Friend’s Wedding

When content creator Lacey Jade Christie from Melbourne, Australia, posted a clip showing off her outfit to a friend’s wedding on TikTok, little did she foresee the firestorm it would kick off.
In November 2022, Christie shared a video of herself explaining the outfit and accessories she would be wearing to a wedding. “I am off to a wedding, here is the fit,” Christie said as she began to list the brands and accessories she wore. The ensemble included green heels, dangling earrings, a pink bedazzled clutch, a headband and a short, low-cut dress with lantern sleeves. However, there appeared to be one problem – the dress was white.
Comments from viewers flooded Christie’s account. Many criticized the color of the dress and called her “disrespectful.”
“Never wear white to (a) wedding unless you’re the bride!” one comment read, while another said, “Sadly I do agree w/the hater, never wear white to a wedding unless requested by invitation.”
“All I have to say is after the wedding I’d like to know how the bride and EVERYONE else felt!,” another user wrote.
“Dress is so cute on you – but maybe should have picked a different color for a wedding?” another comment read.
Others took issue with the cut of the dress and described it as inappropriate.
“Beach wedding? if not looks cheap,” one user said, while another wrote, “You don’t want to do things to distract from the bride.”
“Never wear white to a wedding or something too revealing!” another user chimed in.
“I hope that’s a joke!” another said.
“Fair play I’d die of embarrassment in that…. it’s an absolute disaster on all counts…” a viewer remarked.
“Does this person have a good friend?” another user remarked.

As the hurtful comments continued to pour in, Christie said she had no choice but to turn the comments section off for her own mental well-being. She also posted a video response where she explained how wearing white signified the outdated view that she was a virgin and pure. “Are we still doing that in 2022?” Christie questioned.
She explained that, at the queer wedding, the brides themselves didn’t even wear white, with one dressed in an emerald green gown and the other in ruby red. She added she wasn’t the only guest who had worn a revealing outfit “because it was a lesbian wedding,” she proclaimed proudly. “Everyone was hot, they were feeling themselves, it was a great time,” she said, and added, “you also need to recognize that not every wedding is going to fit your idea of what a wedding should look like.”
Christie also shared her thoughts about navigating through the online hate with Mammamia.
“I did something worse than being fat in a bodycon dress. I wore white to a wedding and made international headlines,” she wrote.
“My video had landed on the wrong side of TikTok, and people were outraged and wanted to share that with me. … Naively I replied to a few comments and tried to explain that it was a queer wedding and that the brides encouraged us to throw social norms out the window – but the comments didn’t stop,” she continued.
Although Christie only wanted to share in the joy of her friends entering into a beautiful union, her feelings were marred by online trolls.
“Not once have I had my videos reach ‘conservative TikTok’ and not once have I had a video affect my mental health how this seemingly innocent OOTD (outfit of the day) did,” she said.

Christie wrote that while “strangers assumed I am a selfish person and wanted to detract attention from the brides,” she knew her “chosen family are the best and most supportive people” who would “never judge someone based on what they look like” or “what they’re wearing.”
She added the ordeal had triggered many of her past trauma as well.
“When you have more than a thousand people tell you that you need to ‘lift your boobs’ or ‘wear something more appropriate,’ that wears a person down,” she lamented.
“I read those comments, I fought against them, I read some more and eventually I questioned myself and my decision,” Christie stated. However, she managed to find the internal strength to back herself.
“I cannot explain the amount of internalized fatphobia that I have had to unlearn to be happy in the body that I have. I exist on the internet to inspire other people to live their best lives in whatever body they exist in. I don’t exist for the enjoyment of trolls,” she asserted.
She also told news.com.au that the backlash was “out of control.” “My outfit did not fit people’s views of what one should traditionally wear to a wedding and I’m fat,” she said.
“I genuinely believe that if a thin person had worn the exact same outfit the outrage would not have been half as bad,” she reasoned.
She urged for more compassion online as “there is a real person at the receiving end of” nasty comments. She added:
“By taking the time to let me know that you think my fat body isn’t acceptable, you could be hurting any number of people in your life. Your words have consequences, even if they don’t directly affect you.”
