Woman Celebrates Turning 105 Years Old With Her First-Ever Birthday Party

The oldest living woman in at least two counties in Cherryville, North Carolina, celebrated her 105th birthday by having her first-ever birthday party.

Lorene Summey enjoyed the best birthday event prepared for her by the staff of the Somerset Court Senior Living Space. Summey also wished to receive 105 birthday cards but got over 1,200 greetings in the mail in November 2022. The well-wishes came from all over the U.S. and as far as Niagara Falls, Canada and London, England.

Becoming a centenarian is a cause for major celebration but Summey, born on Nov. 23, 1917, still spent the next five years after turning 100 without any frenzy. Apparently, Summey had six siblings growing up and as the eldest child, she was often asked to stay home to help around the house.

With such a large family, it's common for the eldest child to be given many responsibilities and chores. Thus, the eldest is also often overlooked when it comes to celebrations or events.

As a young adult, Summey used to work at a local trucking company for nearly four decades after putting herself through night school. Her dedication to her work was almost the same as her dedication to her family. She was the primary caregiver until the end of her husband’s life before he died in 1997.

The woman's only son, Roger, who is in his 80s, described his mother as a strong disciplinarian but a loving mom. Her doctor, Dr. Guillermo Lesassier, told USA Today that for someone past 100 years old, Summey is still in great physical shape and her mind remains sharp.

When the staff of the retirement facility found out about Summey having never had a birthday party, they made sure that her 105th year was truly extra-special and unforgettable. Summey wanted a hoe down for her birthday because she never had the chance to square dance compared to her younger siblings. So, the retirement home staff decorated the main dining hall like a barn and prepared the right music for the dance.

Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam led the birthday party attended by over 200 people. The members of the Cherryville Police Department and the firefighters escorted the birthday girl on her way to the party.

Summey wore a tiara with her pink Western-themed dress to mark the occasion. Lively line and square dancers entertained the crowd. Guests enjoyed the dancing and Summey had a big smile on her face as she clapped to "Cotton-Eyed Joe.

A girl brought her Labrador to the party for Summey to pet. A miniature pony also brought some happiness and delight to the old woman. Joseph, Summey's boyfriend, was unable to attend because he was ill so his brother, Ronnie Parks, was her partner for the first dance.

The birthday girl was surrounded by her family, including her great-grandkids, and her close friends at the retirement home, such as Ann Kozliner, her 67-year-old constant dining buddy.

"She has a wonderful spirit and a great attitude," said Kozliner. "She's thankful everyday to be alive."

Following the special celebration, the City of Cherryville made November 23 "Lorene Summey Day" which will likely be marked with more birthday parties in the years to come. Lesassier said it best, Summey is one very blessed person.
