Once the wedding date is set, brides-to-be spring into action to make sure they have the perfect day they desire. From selecting the perfect wedding dress, jewelry, and shoes, to choosing a flattering hairstyle, brides strive to prepare for their big day. Without a doubt, it can be infuriating when as a bride, you do all you can to set everything in motion, but someone else tampers with it. However, what do you do when that person is your fiancé's mom?
A Reddit user found herself in such a situation a few days before her wedding day and was at a loss for how to move on, even though she expressed her displeasure. The lady with the username u/Repulsive_scheme1359 took to the AITA subreddit in August 2023 to share her story, wanting to know if she crossed a line. The bride-to-be explained that she purchased her wedding dress in the weeks leading up to the wedding.
However, the moment her mother-in-law laid eyes on the dress, she became obsessed with wanting to wear it. The woman explained that her fiancé's mom pleaded with her several times to allow her to try on her wedding dress, but she refused and was adamant about it. She added that she finally put a stop to her mother-in-law's weird demand after she was offered $100 to allow her to try it on. The woman mentioned:
"Her reasoning for persisting so much? She says it's her love for wedding dresses and her obsession with them."
Things came to a head on a certain day when the original poster (OP) returned from work. She relayed that as soon as she walked into the house, her fiancé, who was home, became startled. He got restless and proceeded to prevent her from going into the house.
The future bride noted that he wouldn’t let her enter her room while frantically texting someone. Nonetheless, she went into the room and was astonished to see her mother-in-law standing in her dress. The lady immediately took out her phone and captured her fiancé's mom in her dress. The lady shared her next line of action:
"She and my fiance freaked out after I told her that she needed to pay me for a new dress in 3 days or else I'll show the whole family the photo."
She mentioned her mother-in-law became upset and burst into tears at her demand. Due to this, her fiancé blew up at her. He accused her of overreacting because his mom meant no harm, and all she did was try the dress on. However, the OP refused to back down because she believed the dress should only be worn by the bride.
The future bride added that she also became "disgusted" looking at the dress. She noted that she lost interest in it. The lady added that it was only right that her mother-in-law paid for the dress because she "ruined it for me." She noted that her fiancé continued to berate her, telling her not to treat his mother "like an enemy."
Drama ensued, and it resulted in a huge fight as the couple could not reach a resolution. The OP stated that her fiancé then moved to his mom's house. She noted:
"I feel awful, but I spent 3k on this dress and worked hard to get it. I can't stand looking at it, but people in my family think I'm escalating things and risking my relationship with not only FMIL but my fiancé as well."

The woman later shared an update on the situation, noting that her fiancé offered to pay for the dress so "we can end the conflict." However, he made some requests. Her partner demanded her phone to delete the image himself.
He also wanted her to assure him that she did not make copies of the photo to "use against his mom later." He also demanded that she apologize to his mom and exit his family group page on social media. She was also to log out of Facebook for at least a month.
The lady noted that she did not respond to his conditions or offer to pay because she was unsure. She further relayed that she did not want him to pay as she preferred that her mother-in-law pay herself. "The bride relayed that she was "not being vicious but trying to hold her accountable."
Numerous Redditors commented, expressing concern about the fiancé always siding with his mom. One person mentioned the situation was concerning because the lady's fiancé could continuously take his mom's side. They pointed out that the mother-in-law tampered with her boundaries by asking repeatedly.
Another commenter stated, "He needs to wake up and stop treating his fiancée like that." Someone else added: "He knowingly went behind your back to help his mom try on your dress. He knew it was wrong, he knew you would be upset, and yet he did it anyway." While more Reddit users analyzed the situation, they largely agreed that she was NTA.
