Woman Asks If It Was Wrong To Leave Husband At Restaurant After He Couldn’t Pay Bill

A married couple had been struggling with figuring out how to handle their finances. While there are benefits to keeping them separate as well as benefits to putting them together, the couple had struggled at trying both of these methods. The wife, a secretary, went to Reddit in April 2021 to express her frustration with her husband, a police officer, and his lack of respect when it comes to taking care of their finances.

The couple had only been married for four months at the time that the post was uploaded, and they seemed to be having difficulty with splitting the costs of their living expenses and the fun activities they do together. Both in their thirties, they have already had their fair share of life experiences, but still seemed to be having a rough time balancing independence and married life.

After trying multiple avenues to figure out how to manage their money while still being happy together, the couple resorted to just splitting everything equally. It seemed like everything was working out just fine, since the husband was still able to spend as much as he wanted without the wife bickering at him, and the wife was more at ease knowing that he wasn’t spending her money.

When they went out for a nice dinner together at a restaurant, their plans came crashing down. They were not on the same page when it came time to pay for the bill. The wife simply paid for her portion of the meal, since they were splitting everything equally, but her husband didn’t have the money to pay for his portion. This wasn’t a problem for the wife, and she left him at the restaurant but wondered who was right in this situation.

In her Reddit post, the wife explained that her husband is “bad with money meaning he never plans for tomorrow and enjoys buying new things everyday.” The wife suggested opening a joint account together, to which the husband obliged. Unfortunately, this only created more issues for the couple since the husband viewed all the money in the account as his own and spent even more.

The two realized it was a mistake to create the joint account, so they came up with a new plan. “We decided that each of us have our own salary but both equally pay for everything,” the wife wrote. Since they had agreed to this, the wife assumed they would be splitting the bill when they went out to eat at a restaurant. This came as a surprise to the husband, who admitted he had already spent all the money he had before going to dinner.

After paying her portion of the bill, the wife refused to pay for her husband’s and left, resulting in him calling her “selfish and mean.” The husband managed to have a friend come and pay for his meal but was still upset. “I told him to not take his misplaced anger out on me but he still argued with me about what I did and how unacceptable it was,” the wife wrote

The next morning, she suggested they go to therapy together, but the husband just asked who would pay for it and continued to put all the blame on her. This has left the wife wondering if she was wrong for leaving her husband alone at the restaurant, but a whopping 96% of readers of her Reddit post agreed with her actions.
