For 8-year-old Landon, it was just supposed to be a fun day at the ballpark with his father. But what started out as a fun outing at a baseball game quickly turned dangerous.

Shaun Cunningham had bought the tickets for Landon as an early birthday present, scoring seats that were right next to the field. It was Landon's first baseball game and he couldn't have been more excited.
While Landon rifled through his dad's phone to find some pictures to send to his mom, who was out shopping with her daughter, a bat slipped out of one of the athlete's hands and spun rapidly towards their seats.
At first, Shaun thought it would fly over their heads, but then noticed that it was heading right for his son, still engrossed in the phone. Quickly, he reached out his arm to shield his son's face, and the bat bounced harmlessly to the seats behind them.
It wouldn't be until he saw the picture snapped by Christopher Horner of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he noticed how close the bat actually came to Landon. Had Shaun not reacted the way that he did, the outcome could have been drastically different.
Even though it was Landon's first baseball game, it most likely won't be his last. But no matter how old he gets, one thing's for certain: he'll feel much more comfortable if his dad is sitting right beside him.
