What Being A Strong Woman With High-Functioning Depression Is Really Like

Dec 20, 2018 by apost team

The world sees only a cheery countenance and a bright smile. Behind it all is a never-ending weight that keeps her chained down. A strong woman can give the world a positive face while dealing with depression that never goes away.

A contagious smile and a beautiful laugh. The eyes have a comforting glow that makes you feel warm and safe. From the outside, her life is going good. She is living the life she has dreamt about for years. Her life seems so perfect and everyone feels she deserves it.

Being alone brings out the reality behind the happy smile, though. Instead of smiling, she cries. A cry from the deepest part of her soul.

She struggles to find the strength to get up in the morning. She cries for the aching muscles and bones that never seem to stop. She worries over the money that never seems to be enough, making her need to work harder. She cries for an emptiness that goes to her very core.

Yet, she still smiles.

The people she chooses to surround herself with show her the love she needs so much. She smiles at the beautiful sunrises she gets to see each morning. She smiles when the moon's rays shine their silvery beams down to the earth below. She smiles because her long sought after dreams have become a reality. She smiles because she knows, despite how things are now, they will be better in the future.

She is someone you know. She is your sister, your mother, your friend, your wife, your neighbor. She's not perfect, but she is always trying to be. She always puts others' needs before her own. She never seems to stop moving forward.

She has that big, beautiful smile that you look forward to seeing every day. But, each day she is dealing with depression behind that engaging smile. It's something that never goes away.

High-functioning depression is a real thing. It's something that doesn't hinder everyday responsibilities. However, it's debilitating for anyone dealing with it.
