Every wedding has a flower girl. But how about a flower grandpa? It might sound silly, and it definitely kept the guests laughing. But having a "flower grandpa" at your wedding is also a sweet way to let your grandparents know that you care. Here's how one clever bride made her grandparents a special part of her wedding ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia in 2016.

It starts with an ordinary tradition

If you've been to a wedding, you're familiar with the tradition of a flower girl. The flower girl is typically a young girl who walks down the aisle and throws flower petals on the ground in preparation for the bride's grand entrance. It's an adorable tradition that always has the crowd smiling and snapping photos of this special girl. And better yet, it allows the couple to feature one of their close family members in the ceremony.

Most wedding ceremonies have a flower girl. But when you think about it, there's no book of wedding rules written anywhere that says you have to have a flower girl. In fact, you don't even need a girl at all. How about an elderly man instead? When this bride planned her wedding, she decided that she wanted to shine a spotlight on one of the most important men in her life: her beloved grandfather.

It's truly a sight to behold

When you watch the video, the guests are clearly delighted. They laugh and smile when the bride's grandfather starts throwing flower petals across the aisle. And by the look on his face, he's clearly just as delighted as they are. A few of the guests even seem to wipe tears from their eyes as they witness this touching scene.

The groom laughs fondly as he watches his grandfather-in-law strewing flower petals across the aisle. He tosses a few petals to one guest in particular, which makes her laugh. This man is truly a beloved part of this family. Can you think of a better way to show your grandparents how much you appreciate them?

It's all thanks to the bride

The bride in question is Jen Briskin, who was planning her wedding with her fiance Austin. According to Jen, she always knew that she wanted to give her grandfather a special role in her wedding. Unfortunately, there aren't any traditional wedding roles for grandparents. Luckily, Jen was able to improvise, reports ABC News.

Jen has always been close to her grandfather. Every Sunday, the two of them go for a walk in the park and talk about everything that's on their minds. It was clear to Jen that her grandfather couldn't be just another guest at her wedding. She wanted to show everyone how much she loves him and how important their bond is to her.

To make her request, Jen came up with the perfect gift idea: a handkerchief embroidered with the words "Will you be my Flower Grandpa?" Of course, he said yes. And now it was time to prepare for the role of a lifetime.

Jen's grandfather took his role seriously

It might seem like a simple task, but Jen's grandfather wanted to make sure that he pulled it off without a hitch. To prepare for his role, he talked to Jen's sister Allison, who was also her maid of honor, reports People.

They practiced his role using dead leaves instead of flower petals. We don't know how many times they practiced, but judging by the video, it seemed like he had it down to an art form by the time the wedding arrived.

When the big day arrived, it's anyone's guess how this would have played out. Would the guests be shocked or confused, or would they find the whole thing comical? Luckily, Jen's guests were delighted by the sight of her flower grandpa.

He played his part in the wedding effortlessly, throwing flower petals to the side and joking with the audience as he walked down the aisle. Austin watched on with laughter and affection in his eyes. It's clear that he's marrying into a very special family!

At the reception, Jen says that everyone couldn't stop talking about her grandfather. Pictures show that he was the center of the celebrations, with Jen and Austin happily dancing along with him.

She added that she's incredibly lucky to have a grandfather who would agree to be her "flower grandpa." We couldn't agree more. Some grandparents might have laughed it off, but Jen's grandfather took it seriously and treated his role like a special privilege.

It's brilliant, it's unconventional and it's the perfect way to celebrate the new couple. Let's hope that Jen and Austin have years of happiness ahead of them!

Don't be afraid to break tradition
