Until he was in kindergarten, Justin Gallegos had to use a walker to move around. More than a decade later, he is in his junior year at the University of Oregon. Instead of using a walker, Justin runs a seven-minute mile.

One Student Overcomes Cerebral Palsy

Unfortunately, life has not been easy for Justin. Since he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) as a child, he has had to work harder than other kids to move around. The condition makes it challenging to control his limbs, which makes walking difficult.

Despite his difficulties, Justin has overcome CP and become a runner.

In April of 2018, he crossed the finish line of the Eugene Half Marathon. As he raced over the finish line, camera crews captured the amazing moment.

Justin Goes Pro

Justin thought that he was just running a race, but it turns out that something else was going on behind the scenes. The Elevation Om film company arrived to film the half marathon, but they did not tell Justin about the other reason why they had been called out. Something truly amazing was about to happen, and they wanted to capture the special moment on video.

Triumphantly, Justin crossed the finish line. Then, the insight director of Nike, John Douglass, approached Justin with a piece of paper. When Justin read the document, he was stunned. It was a professional contract to represent Nike. Justin would be the first person with cerebral palsy to ever represent the company.

You can see the entire moment in the video. In the film, it looks like Justin is struggling to find what to say. His excitement is amazing to see. We definitely think that this amazing young man deserved to be recognized for his heroic commitment, courage and hard work.

Justin was understandably overcome by the news. He burst out in tears of joy as he hugged John and the other runners.

Overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement, he fell to the ground. Later, Justin officially announced the amazing news on Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day.

Growing up with a disability, Justin never thought that being a pro athlete was possible.

As a child, it seemed as insane as climbing Mount Everest. Despite the odds working against him, Justin managed to overcome his limitations and achieve his dreams. It took hundreds of miles of running and a lot of hard work, but he reached his goal. Now, he is already planning out his next dreams.

This young man is truly an inspiration. He shows what can be accomplished when you are determined and committed to achieving your dreams.
