Video: 4 Years After Meeting Love Of His Life At Special Olympics, Man With Down Syndrome Proposes

Not everyone is fortunate enough to meet someone special who shares their same hobbies. Whether it's a passion for cooking, athletics, or bird watching, it's pretty awesome when two people who enjoy the same activities.
That's exactly what happened with Andrew Gerbitz and Maddie Elhers. A very important sporting event first brought them together nearly ten years ago.
The pair met one another at a Special Olympics in Wisconsin. They started dating about five years ago, and their friendship has blossomed into true love. Gerbitz was so enamored with Elhers that he realized it was time for him to discover if she was ready to take a very important step in their relationship.

The couples' families have been expecting them to get married for quite some time. They've even been making preparations, such as taking time to attend weddings and make sure both Gerbitz and Elhers were comfortable with the idea.
This is a couple who love to stay active. They take a Zumba class together at Pabst Farms YMCA in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Since that's one of their favorite activities, Gerbitz decided it would make an ideal and surprising setting for his marriage proposal.
He chose his would-be fiance a lovely diamond ring and started making his plans. Right in the middle of class, Andrew blew Maddie away by getting down on one knee and popping the question. Both family and a local news outlet came along to witness and capture the special moment on camera. The heartwarming moment later became a global sensation on social media.
Andrew's straightforward wording was extremely touching and heartfelt. He told Maddie that he knew he loved her very much and wanted her to be in his life.
Then he finished by saying, "Would you marry me please?"

Maddie's cheeks were soon flooded with tears of joy. She nodded her affirmative answer to his proposal and threw her arms around Andrew in a warm, loving embrace.
She later told representatives from Special Olympics Wisconsin that she was shocked and surprised when he proposed to her right there at Zumba class. She said that she loves Andrew and can't keep her eyes off of him. Undoubtedly, it was one of the happiest moments of her life!

Gerbitz admits that he was nervous, but he thinks it was worth it to have the love of his life agree to take this step of commitment together.
These two truly believe that they are meant for one another, and their families most definitely agree. They plan to be married in a barn sometime during the summer of 2020. Possible honeymoon destinations include Hawaii or California.
