The death of a child is heartwrenching. A funeral director who has been in the business for over 35 years still finds it difficult to take a child's body into care. Getting a parking fine while doing this made it even harder.
Michael Fogg was called to Sheffield Children's Hospital on October 4th. The 54-year-old funeral director was visiting the hospital's morgue to pick up a body and to take it into their care.
Getting everything in order to transfer the body took about twenty minutes. That was longer than usual, but not out of the ordinary. A few days later, he received a notice in the mail that he had received a parking fine.

He was outraged. "I just don't think it's right," he said to The Mirror. He commented that they knew they were at the morgue at a children's hospital. It's the last place he thought someone would try to make a profit. Mr. Fogg has been in the business for 36 years and thought he had seen everything. But, the fine gave him an unpleasant surprise.
He had done pickups at this hospital in the past. There is usually an attendant that will wave his vehicle through. On that particular morning, however, no one was there when he arrived. He parked and went into the hospital.
Because it is a child who has died, the process isn't business as usual. You don't just walk in and come right back out. It takes a bit longer. Mr. Fogg's mortuary doesn't charge for handling the body of a child who is younger than sixteen. This makes it harder for him to accept the fine. For the company to try to charge his mortuary for a parking fine is outrageous.
He has decided to fight it in court if necessary. He wants a judge to decide if he deserves a ticket or not. To get the word out, Mr. Fogg shared a photo of the ticket on Facebook. Almost everyone was outraged. One commented, "Unbelievable. Some people have no integrity at all or compassion."
When the news media contacted the hospital about the situation, they said the fine was removed as soon as it was brought to their attention. They are reviewing their processes to avoid similar issues in the future according to The Mirror.
