Uma Thurman Says Her Marriage To Gary Oldman When She Was Just 18 Was ‘A Mistake’

Before she made a mark as a cult movie star in "Pulp Fiction," Uma Thurman was briefly married to award-winning actor Gary Oldman but she has called their love affair in the 1990s "a mistake."

Thurman was only 18 years old when she met and started a relationship with Oldman, who was 12 years her senior. The actress admitted in a Vanity Fair exclusive in 1996 that the English actor was her first love and she had no prior experiences with men.

The Boston-born actress, who started as a model at 15 years old, transitioned to doing movies when she was 17 and was a supporting cast member in "Dangerous Liaisons" in 1988. She worked with Oldman on the set of "Henry & June" in 1990 but they actually met on the set of "State of Grace" a year before when Thurman was said to be dating the film's director, Phil Joanou.

Oldman was then newly divorced from English actress Lesley Manville when he got into a relationship with Thurman. He and Manville were married for three years and they share a son, Alfie, born in 1988.

Thurman and Oldman were very quiet about their relationship and kept everything quite low profile to the press. However, Oldman attracted controversy when he was arrested for drunk driving in 1991. In an interview with L.A. Times in 1995, the actor admitted that his drinking impacted his brief marriage to Thurman and even his relationship with Manville.

Friends of the couple also told Vanity Fair that only a "special kind of woman" would be able to tolerate Oldman's ways. He was once believed to have said that living with Thurman was like "living with an angel."

During her time with Oldman, Thurman, then a rising Hollywood star, was suddenly out of the spotlight.

"(It was) a mistake, but you know, what can I say? He's a truly great actor," the actress told Vanity Fair. "It was a crazy love affair that ended, as it needed to."

In a Playboy exclusive in 2014, Oldman also believed that his marriage to Thurman was a mistake that lasted "for 10 minutes."

"I don’t think it meant very much to either of us," the actor said.

Since their divorce, Thurman was married a second time. In 1997, she and Ethan Hawke filmed the movie "Gattaca" and tied the knot a year later. The couple raised two kids, Maya and Levon. However, the couple decided to call it quits in 2005 and Thurman discussed the difficulties of co-parenting after the divorce with Oprah Winfrey. Thurman said that she and her second husband might not be amicable but they still need to constantly talk for the sake of their children.

"Even if you’re in a fight, or even if things are going badly, it’s in their best interests that everybody comes out okay."

After Hawke, Thurman was engaged to hotelier Arpad Busson, with whom she has a daughter, Luna.

On the other hand, Oldman is currently married to his fifth wife, art curator Gisele Schmidt. They got married in 2017 and have been enjoying a very private life as a couple.

Aside from Manville and Thurman, he was also married to Donya Fiorentino and Alexandra Edenborough. Oldman deliberately does not want to talk about his personal life to the press because people, especially on the internet, have a habit of digging up the mistakes of the past.
