In early 2025, the internet and animal lovers worldwide alike were keeping up with heartwarming images of a bald eagle family nesting in Southern California. The eagle couple, named Jackie and Shadow, were filmed sheltering their three eggs and waiting for them to hatch in a live stream made available on YouTube and watched by over 12,000 people online. This live stream was hosted by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization that advocates for environmental awareness and conservation.
Since many were keeping up with the feathered family, fans of the channel were quick to notice something alarming with the hatchlings in March 2025. After all three eggs hatched, there was a snowstorm that appeared to have grave implications for one of the hatchlings. Initially, the organization responded when viewers noticed that one of the hatchlings was missing.
“We do not know anymore at this point,” a spokesperson for the nonprofit organization said in answer to fan questions.
Friends of Big Bear Valley went on to share its observations while keeping watch over the family, noting that Jackie and Shadow were sticking to their feeding routines and bringing food and hunted prey to feed their eaglets. However, there were only two chicks to see.
“Both Jackie and Shadow have changed shifts, brought food and have attempted feedings like normal. We have only been able to see two chicks during those feedings. We continue to stay positive until we know the entirety of the situation,” it shared.

Eventually, Friends of Big Bear Valley came out and shared that one of the eaglets had died in the snowstorm. In a post on Facebook, the organization revealed that the baby bird was last seen alive during a feeding session with its siblings and was presumed to have died as a result of melting snow. It was not known which one of the eaglets had died because of their closeness in size, nor what caused this sad occurrence. Explaining the tragedy, it wrote:
“We are deeply saddened to report that one of Jackie and Shadow’s chicks did not make it through the winter storm that brought 2 feet of snow to the area.”
Fortunately, the two remaining eaglets were “doing well,” as confirmed by the organization. They remain in the care of their parents after the storm, which also destroyed some of the organization’s sound and lighting equipment. Friends of Big Bear Valley shared insight into the death of the eaglet and the state of the family now, encouraging fans to honor the late eaglet and remember the positivity it brought them in such a short time.
“Even when nature is difficult to watch, and sometimes even harder to understand, we must trust that it has its reasons,” it wrote. "In the midst of the sadness, we want to honor the life of this chick for its courage in getting as far as it did and for the joy it brought to us in its short time here.”
They finished off their statement by thanking viewers all over the world for their concern for the feathered family, writing:
“Thank you all for caring so much about Jackie and Shadow and their chicks.”
