Tom Selleck Reunited With 'Magnum, P.I.' Co-Star Larry Manetti Onscreen 35 Years Later

There’s no doubt Tom Selleck has created himself a stellar career. Perhaps the most popular character he portrayed was the titular role in “Magnum, P.I.” While fans may miss the show, he recently gave them the sweetest treat years later as he reunited with one of his cast members.

Tom is one of the nation's most beloved stars, whose mark on American culture has seasoned and aged as well as he has. With a career that has spanned decades and notable roles in films and television, Tom has become a Hollywood icon with his charm and immense talent.

From his breakthrough role in "Magnum, P.I." and his guest role in "Friends" to his recent series "Blue Bloods," audiences have loved Tom's charm for over four decades. But despite being an acclaimed actor, Tom has made his mark as a kind and humble human.

After he experienced immense success, the star opted for a quiet life away from the limelight. So the veteran actor traded in the glamorous life of the big city for a quiet one on his beautiful 65-acre ranch in Ventura, California. But he didn't turn his back on acting; rather, he continued to work but on his own terms.

Another motivation for Tom to live on his ranch was to live a quiet life with his wife, Jillie Mack, and their daughter, Hannah Selleck. In fact, Tom and his wife's story is incredibly romantic.

Already established in his career, Tom was shooting a movie on location in London when he saw Mack, an actress, in the musical "Cats." Enamored with her, Tom went to see the production multiple times before the couple went on their first date. The rest, as they say, is history.

After Hannah was born, Tom took a step back from his work as an actor to spend more time with his family. When he later returned to the screen in the mid to late '90s, Tom found roles that he loved to play, and since then, he's managed to find a great balance between Hollywood and his personal life.

Looking back over his 50-year-long career, Tom told People he is grateful for everything he has been given, both on-screen and off. "I'm proud of my work, I still love what I do, and I have my family," said Tom. "I've been enormously fortunate."

Magnum, P.I.” ran for eight seasons and aired from December 1980 to May 1988. In the series, Tom played the titular role of private investigator Thomas Magnum. While the show brought him massive success, Tom said he thought fame wasn’t for him.

"I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public person, but until you've lived it, there's no way to understand it," Tom told PEOPLE in 2020. "I had a feeling of, 'I don't think I'm cut out for this.'"

Tom also made it clear that the reason he left the show was not that he no longer liked working on it, but simply because he wanted to live what he described as a normal life which he said he didn’t have at that time.

"I quit Magnum to have a family," he said. "It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that."

Despite taking a hiatus, he still pursued his craft and never left it. In fact, he has been a part of several shows throughout the years after “Magnum, P.I.”

One of them is “Blue Bloods” which he has been a part of since 2010. He plays the role of NYPD Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. Today he brings the character to life in the popular TV series, which has him spending time between New York City and his ranch in Ventura, California. Although he does seem to love ranch life, the actor has been working hard on the CBS drama series for over a decade.

In February 2023, “Magnum, P.I.” had a mini-reunion on the set of “Blue Bloods” as two of its cast members, Tom and Larry Manetti shared the screen once again for one of the episodes of the show.

Donnie Wahlberg shared a photo of the rare moment, with the cast of “Blue Bloods,” including Tom posing in a photo with Manetti on set. Other cast members in the photo include Bridget Moynahan, Andrew Terraciano, Will Estes and Vanessa Ray.

"#MagnumMonday!" Wahlberg wrote. "It's a mini Magnum, PI reunion on the set of #BlueBloods this week, with guest star Larry Manetti & Tom Selleck — together again."

"Wishing the late greats Roger E Mosley & John Hillerman could be here, too. #Legends #MagnumPI #BlueBloods #Family," he added, referencing two of the cast members who passed away in August 2022 and November 2017, respectively.

The reunion of Tom and Manetti marked their first onscreen appearance together since "Magnum P.I." aired more than three decades ago. Manetti took on the role of Orville “Rick” Wright on the show. What a reunion indeed!
