Toddler Born Missing Feet Gets Puppy Born With Missing Paw

A little girl from Tennessee named Sapphyre Johnson has a lot in common with her new puppy, Lieutenant Dan. Her toes were amputated when she was a baby and he was born without a front paw. A video by Greenville News shows their first at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, South Carolina on April 20, 2015, when Sapphyre was three years old.

Sapphyre is a child who lives with a physical disability. Born with the condition that left some of her fingers missing, Sapphyre needed a surgical procedure, which resulted in the amputation of both her feet when she was still a toddler.

The fact that Sapphyre has no feet doesn't seem to be a problem. The girl has a pair of artificial feet, and despite her tender age, she can comfortably put them on without adult help. When the two are together, it is hard to notice the smooth chemistry. The little girl has magically grown to be a very independent child, despite her condition.

The relationship between Sapphyre and the dog was love at first sight. According to Elaine Hardin, a child life specialist from Shriners, “The first time I showed her a picture of the dog, she looked at it for a moment, and said, ‘That’s my puppy. He’s just like me!’” She confessed. She then went on about the dog, “He’s a special dog, and he’s going to a special child.”

Sapphyre and the little dog, a white German Shepherd, called Lt. Dan (after the Forrest Gump character Lt. Dan, an amputee) is a match made in heaven. With each other, they appear stronger and perfectly complement each other. The dog offers Sapphyre a special kind of love and affection. They look like a friendship that can live a lifetime, and as they grow bigger, they will achieve so much together as they continue learning much more about each other.

We have attached a video of the pair playing together, and it starts with a cute photo of the two, with Sapphyre’s hand around Dan’s back on a grass patch. When the video begins playing, Sapphyre sits next to her prosthetic feet, and the little white dog is brought in for them to play together. The dog is excited as he wobbles around Sapphyre, following a stuffed doll.

There is so much beauty when a child bonds with a disabled pet, and gives it the love it lacks. In this case, both Sapphire and the dog are disabled, making them the perfect match for companionship.
