He was propelled into stardom as a teen heart-throb in his 90’s movies “The Basketball Diaries” and “Romeo + Juliet,” but it was his role as Jack in “Titanic” that made him one of the biggest stars of the time. His good looks and charming demeanor on-screen cemented him as an actor with lasting power.
DiCaprio went on to work with one of the heavyweights of cinema, director Martin Scorcese, in a partnership that still continues to this day. Their first film together, “Gangs Of New York” is hailed as a classic and was the beginning of the relationship that spawned “The Departed,” “The Aviator,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
DiCaprio also filled the shoes of a literary role from ‘the great American novel,’ “The Great Gatsby.” He shined in the colorful, modern retelling of the story as the rich socialite Jay Gatsby in his second collaboration with director Baz Luhrmann.
For all of the serious acting that DiCaprio did over his career, and for appearing in dozens of critically well-received roles, he didn’t win an Academy Award for best actor until 2015 for his role in the wilderness-action movie “The Revenant.” Many felt it was long overdue, after he was nominated several times.
His most recent box office success was “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a Quentin Tarantino film from 2018 that followed the story of Leo as a washed up Western actor against the backdrop of the Sharon Tate murders of the 60s. He continues to work on movies as well as his environmental foundation that works against climate change.
