Tina Turner Says Having Her ‘Legs On Show’ Became Part Of Her Style & Got As Much Attention As Her Voice

It's indisputable that Tina Turner has one of the most recognizable voices of all time, especially when she has sold over 100 million records around the world. The "Private Dancer" hitmaker, however, asserts that her legs have become just as famous as her voice, and she is certain that some of her fans associate her style more with this physical attribute.
In a rare interview, the legendary singer confirmed that she insured her iconic legs for £2 million (about $2.5 million). In her younger years, the star admitted that she had no confidence about parts of her body, but the attention her legs got from her supporters was a big validation.
Indeed, her signature look on the stage has always been the sexiest shorts and skirts since her mainstream success as a music artist in the 1970s. She continued to wear mini-skirts for most of her 50-year career, never letting age deter her from showing off her beautiful pair of long legs.
Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Tennessee, she learned to sing in a Baptist church choir. She and her sisters used to hang out at clubs in St. Louis to watch musicians perform. She then met Ike Turner in 1957 and convinced him to let her sing with his band.
Tina and Ike not only worked on music together but they got married. In 1960, the pair came out with their debut single "A Fool in Love," which introduced her to radio listeners as Tina Turner. The song was an instant hit and was followed by more chart-busting singles.
However, by 1976 Tina and Ike's professional partnership and personal relationship went downhill and they divorced two years later. By the time Tina embarked on a solo career, she also emerged with a new look and a sexier image.
Oprah Winfrey interviewed Tina about her legs in 2005, and the singer was candid that she didn't use to love her pair of pins as a younger woman.
"I always had long legs," Tina said. "When I was young, I used to think, "Why do I look like a little pony?"
Tina also said having long legs made it difficult for her to dance on the stage. She used to wear long gowns as her costume when she worked with her former husband, and she also didn't know how to dress up her elongated body feature.
“As I grew up, I learned what worked for me,” the singer shared. “That’s where the short dresses came from. And you can’t dance in a long dress.”
"I only had my legs on show so much as it made it much easier to dance,” she told The Sun. “And then it became part of my style.”
Other performers like Beyonce, Katy Perry and even Pink have picked up on the same style as Tina as they have also been wearing short stage costumes that allow them to freely move their legs.
In 2009, Tina officially announced her retirement from performing when she finished her 50th-anniversary tour. However, the singer remains relevant because of her stage show, "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical," which celebrated its fifth anniversary on the West End in April 2023.
The Grammy-winning singer, who is currently enjoying her life at 83 years old, said she mounted the musical so that fans may still watch her perform through other younger singers and actresses. She also enjoys watching the artists who play her on the stage because they "find a version of me in themselves.”
