Calling your mother is always a great idea – but it's an absolute must on Mother's Day, at least if you can't be with your mum in person.
Just in time, country superstar Tim McGraw shows us how it's done with a heartfelt new song. The just-released "I Called Mama" is sure to get listeners everywhere a little misty-eyed on this special day.
The gentle ballad, which was written by Lance Miller, Marv Green and Jimmy Yeary, points out how something as seemingly trivial as a short phone call can turn both your and your mother's day completely around. "Grabbed my guitar from the backseat, wrote a song just for me," Tim McGraw sings, "I sung it for the blue sky and a couple live oak trees/ I thought of home, grabbed my phone from my pocket/ And I called mama."
In an interview with CNN, McGraw explained how it mainly due to his wife Faith Hill that the song got released. When he played it to her, she encouraged him to make a record of it.
"Every time I got to the chorus when it got to the 'I Called Mama' line, I fell apart and I couldn't sing the song because I would just start crying," McGraw told CNN. "That's when I knew I needed to cut it and see how it was going to turn out."

As if the song itself wasn't touching enough, the song's video is especially poignant as it features actual footage of Tim McCraw with his mother, Elizabeth Ann D'Agostino. In his interview with CNN, McGraw explains how he never even would have gotten to Nashville if it hadn't been for her:
"I called my mom and told her I was going to quit college and move to Nashville. It was a tough call because I was scared to death, because I knew how bad she wanted me to go to college and how much she wanted me to make a success of my life... and she said, 'I'm surprised you haven't already.' When she told me that, it was a vote of confidence to sell everything I had and get on a greyhound bus and go to Nashville. You don't want to let your mom down."

The heartbreaking tribute to his mother is McGraw's first single since he signed with Big Machine Records in early 2020. On his Facebook page, the star posted this special message to his fans:
"No matter if your mom is still around or not, or if you are married or have kids or have children that call you.... I hope this song can give you a moment of clarity or comfort, or just a smile."
