Sweet potatoes are a healthy food packed with vitamins E and B6 as well as iron. They also have high levels of potassium. Apples are another common food that you see during the fall season and are just as healthy.

Like apples, sweet potatoes can be prepared in dozens of ways depending on what you like to eat with them.

Instead of eating these two foods separately, you can make a tantalizing dish using the two ingredients along with a few other items that you probably already have in your kitchen.

You'll use Swiss cheese and caramelized onions to make delicious twice-baked sweet potatoes with apples, the main course or a side dish depending on how many people you're going to serve.

These potatoes are full of flavor and bake in a short time. You can also add a few other ingredients to customize the recipe.

Aside from Swiss cheese and onions, you can add crumbled turkey sausage, a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, and a drizzle of maple syrup.

These ingredients can be changed depending on the flavors that you and your family like or what you have available.

An option for the dish is to top it with roasted pecans or another kind of nut that you like during the fall season.

One way to complete this simple dish is to add a beverage that you might enjoy during this time of the year as well, such as apple cider or hot chocolate.

Instead of maple syrup, you could drizzle chocolate sauce on top of the sweet potatoes or brown sugar and melted butter.

When you cut the potatoes, cut them lengthwise so that you can hollow out each half. Gently mash the potatoes with the cheese, apples, and other ingredients.

Put the mixture back into the potato halves, baking them for about 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
