Jackfruit is a monster-sized fruit that is part of the fig and mulberry family, which makes this fleshy fruit a sweet and delicious treat. It's a good source of Vitamin C and dietary fiber, and the entire giant fruit is only 95 calories.
But what makes this fruit an amazing meat alternative is its flavor after an hour of cooking. An unripened jackfruit tastes just like pulled pork!

Restaurants in Melbourne, Australia have been the first to jump on this new meat alternative craze, and have created burgers so delicious that their vegan and vegetarian customers were worried that they were actually served real meat.
"I had a girl come up the other day who was devouring it," said Allie Pyke, owner of popular eatery The Alley in Melbourne, "This poor girl, she was halfway through her Hawaiian burger when she came up to one of the cashiers and said 'I think there's meat in my burger and I'm vegan.'"
"My cashier had to assure her there was no meat in her burger. She just was so dumbfounded that it was vegan."
Vegans, vegetarians, and those who eat primarily plant-based diets have started experimenting with the fruit, and recommend cooking it with a savory sauce of your choice and serving it in a burger or a crockpot dish.
More and more recipes are popping up online and on Instagram, and they all look AMAZING.
One jackfruit is enough to feed an entire family, and buying one from a fruit vendor can cost you only $2.50 per pound. We think this sounds like a total steal! But be sure to eat your jackfruit fast; it only lasts a few weeks after harvest :)
