What would you do without your wheels? Your vehicle takes you everywhere, and most of the time, you take it for granted that your car remains parked exactly where you put it. Sometimes, that isn't the case because auto thefts are on the rise by 30 percent in no thanks to the key-less technology of newer vehicles.

Being without your wheels can add up to a major expense and cripple the way you get around. Unfortunately, a neighbor's car got stolen right from her driveway, and police have not solved the case three months later.

You can avoid being a victim with one simple hack.

Security experts blame auto-thefts on the so-called sophistication of modern vehicle security systems and the digital connection to the car. Keyless kinds of vehicles allow you to be lazy, press a button and leave your car, but savvy thieves can get around the system and high-technology. Bad guys don't need your key to rip off your car.

According to an article by Sky News, bandits take advantage of these keyless fobs and are able to copy their code and amplify the sound even when the device is not near to your car. The thieves are able to turn on the device and rip off your vehicle, and most of these incidents occur late at night.

A news report by USA Today claims that law enforcement is not prepared to deal with the surge in digital auto-theft. You, however, can take action, and stop these greedy thieves in their tracks, and it's very inexpensive.

The two-step hack involves an empty coffee can. That's right. Simply store the fob in a coffee can at night, says former cybersecurity expert, Holly Hubert. She tells USA Today that the insulation will disrupt the signal, so bandits cannot steal the code. During the daylight hours, there's another effective hack (step two) involving a little aluminum foil. Wrap your key fob thoroughly in the foil to block the signal. It works and costs next to nothing.

It's better to be safe than sorry and several thousand dollars richer. No one wants their precious wheels ripped off and to be stranded. The price tag is high, and the inconvenience is frustrating.

What do you think about wrapping your car key in aluminum foil? Is this a brilliant hack or not? The digital world is exciting, fast and always changing. Consumers have to stay ahead and protect their assets. Spread this information to all car-loving folks, and let them know how a coffee can and some aluminum foil can become their car's best friend.
