Many of us remember the great movies that came from the eighties. Every category, from horror to comedy to romance, had something for everyone. But many people enjoyed the dance category the most.

When you think of eighties dance movies, you often think of the more popular ones, such as Footloose and Dirty Dancing. These two are still talked about often; in fact, many couples pick the last dance from Dirty Dancing as their first dance for their weddings! But not too many people remember the movie that came out in 1985.

“Girls Just Want To Have Fun” is a Classic Tale

If you haven’t seen the movie “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” then you have missed out on an amazing film. We are here to tell you that once you do watch it, you won’t believe that you ever missed it in the first place! That’s because there are tons of reasons that this story, even though it is more than 30 years old, is the best. Are you ready to check out all of the reasons why? Keep reading for the top ten reasons this dance movie from the eighties should be at the top of your watch list.

1. It’s a classic tale of a “fish out of water”

To begin, Janey Glenn, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, has to move to Chicago after her father is transferred there for work. She reveals how much she loves dancing at her new school. She then becomes friends with Lynne Stone, played by Helen Hunt, after Lynne changes next to her on the bus.

Lynne then helps Janey chase her dreams by taking her out of her comfort zone.

She teaches Janey to have fun in a world full of rules and responsibilities.

2. We quickly see what we want to see

You watch a dance movie for the dancing, right? With this movie, you get to see some sweet moves right away. After Lynne and Janey meet on the bus, they head to a home where Lynne is babysitting to watch Dance TV.

Janey, of course, is eager to enter the dance contest, while Lynne wants to become the queen of the show. We are able to see some dancing from the stars of DTV while the two girls plot their next move.

3. It’s the perfect contest

The first contest shows the girls trying to dance as well as they can to make it to the second round of competitions.

Janey stands out among all of the other contestants with her flips and acrobatics. This is when she meets Jeff, another dancer.

Jeff is also a very talented dancer, although we only really see him spinning here and there on the stage. This does seem to be all he needs to move to the next round, though!

4. It’s the classic “odd couple” routine

Janey is a perfectionist and Jeff is still somewhat untrained. This gives us the perfect odd couple routine. Think of it like the reversal of roles in the movie Dirty Dancing, as Janey is in charge of showing Jeff how to dance. She gets just as frustrated with him as Patrick Swayze did in his classic role.

5. Strained relationships make the movie even more funny and magical

It’s still fun to watch how much the two of them struggle together as they practice their dance routine. They both get on each other’s nerves from time to time. Throw in another character, spoiled Natalie, and the storyline gets that much better.

6. The “girl power” is strong

Natalie tries hard to ruin Janey’s chance to be a star. However, Lynne steps in to rescue the scene. Their plan is to sabotage her party by inviting the guests Natalie specifically was not going to invite, who then end up destroying everything when they show up. Since Jeff is present, he gets to see that Janey is not always as uptight as he believed, which helps them to bond even more.

7. True friends do whatever they can for one another

Everyone needs a friend like Lynne Stone. First, she was the reason that Janey was able to go after her lifelong dreams. Then, when Janey’s father sets up a security system to keep her in, Lynne comes along to bust her out.

She was there to get her out of the house and then off to the dance studio to audition. Of course, the two made it just in time!

8. We see even more dance montages

It’s great that they managed to add yet another montage into the movie. You get to see the different dances of the other finalists while Janey’s father tries to get to the studio after spotting his young daughter on the television.

9. Of course, he is too late

Janey and Jeff pull off an epic routine before he even gets there. You won’t ever look at Baby and Johnny’s dance the same after watching their performance. Sorry, but that’s simply the truth! Plus, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was released two years before “Dirty Dancing” was anyways.

10. Lynne Stone is again the real winner

Lynne Stone is definitely the real star of this amazing movie. She doesn’t ever do anything that isn’t totally perfect during her time on the screen, and she deserves all of the recognition that she can get. We would love to see a sequel of just Lynne!

So if you have never seen this classic eighties movie, please, do yourself a favor and go rent it right now. If you did see it before, please watch it again. You won’t regret the decision!
