The Huge South American Harpy Eagle Weighs In At 20 Pounds

Photos of a rare bird species are making the rounds on the internet both because of its appearance and because of its size. Known as the Harpy Eagle, this large species is found in the rainforests of Central and South America, though loss of habitat has led to most being held in captivity.

The average internet user has never heard of or seen the Harpy Eagle, but thanks to a few viral photos of the bird, it is now gaining in popularity and awe. Viewers everywhere agree that the bird is giant, and has an appearance that is both intimidating and hilarious at the same time.

Known as the most powerful and heaviest bird, the Harpy Eagle hunts smaller reptiles, monkeys, sloths, rodents, and other prey that is small to medium in size according to the San Diego Zoo. Its choice in prey is larger than what most would consider a bird capable of hunting and eating, but the sheer size and strength of the bird is easily able to overpower these animals.

The Harpy Eagle relies on its physical features to both hunt and capture prey that is large in size. Impressive talons on its feet are huge, as big as the human hand and definitely more deadly. The Harpy Eagle uses these talons along with its powerful wings made possible by the incredible wingspan it boasts to capture and carry away the prey that it spies and captures.

Quite goofy in appearance, the eagle is both fluffy and sleek, with a feathered neck and an almost owlish face. Fluffy, feathered ears resemble those of a teddy bear and huge feather covered wings completely wrap the eagle's body.

Weighing up to twenty pounds the Harpy Eagle species requires plenty of hunting ground in order to survive in the wild. Because of the loss of habitat, there are fewer and fewer individuals found in the wild each year according to My Modern Met.
