Prom is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated events for most teenagers. Whether it be to get noticed by a crush or to simply have fun with friends, there’s no doubt that a lot of people look forward to attending prom. After all, it’s also one of the few moments in a person’s life that they can no longer go back to. That’s probably why a lot of people make sure to look their best during prom and just seize the moment. Of course, not all people love attending events like prom – such as teens who dread socializing with other people, not to mention the amount of money or time a person will spend looking for the perfect outfit.
Then again, there’s no need to spend so much money on prom. Sometimes, one just needs to be creative. Take it from a 17-year-old girl who went viral on TikTok after she shared a video of her making a DIY prom dress. While the whole process was labor-intensive, the results captivated people on TikTok, garnering millions of views on the platform. But the dress used to be a beaded strapless wedding gown which she dyed pink.
Megan Johnson got creative by transforming her thrift-shopped dress. She started by pouring boiling water into a tub before putting the dye. After she took out the dress, she let it dry on the floor.
Several people praised Johnson’s dress. Some said they were surprised at how it turned out to be.
“Turned out lovely! I was worried it’d be too hot pink,” one person said. “This is the first time I’ve seen someone do this successfully,” another commenter said.

“I'm so invested in this. The dress is gorgeous!” another person wrote.
Meanwhile, others shared their own experiences buying thrift and how it saved them during their prom days. “Thrifts is the way to go that’s where I found my prom dress when I was in high school too,” one person said.
Others asked Johnson how the pearl beads and lace turned out after she dyed them. “I’ve had this same idea for so long, how was the pearl beading and lace affected by the dye?” one person asked. “The lace turned into a darker pink outline and surprisingly the pearls turned a tinted pink too! I was worried about it but it turned out good!” Johnson said.
In another video, Johnson could be seen wearing her prom dress while doing a lip-sync of Lizzy McAlpine’s “Ceilings." A lot of people noticed how beautiful the dress looked on her, with some even saying she looked like a real-life Disney princess. Others said she looked like Barbie and Rapunzel while wearing it.
“You really look like a Disney princess. You’re so pretty it came out really good,” one person said. “In the best way possible you look (like) one of the princesses in the barbie princess movies,” another person said. “Okayyyy, it’s giving Rapunzel,” another person said.
There were also those who made suggestions about what else she could do with it and said she could also do some alterations and turn it into a whole different dress in the future.
"Okay imagine if you cut like two to three inches and put petticoats or a hoop skirt to get a dreamy Dior silhouette," one commenter said. Johnson responded, "I'll do that after prom."
