Teenage Girl Bravely Fights Off Hawk After It Attempts To Eat Her Puppy

Many people will do anything for the benefit of their pets. This fact is true whether an expensive trip to the veterinarian is needed or the pet owner's home must be altered to accommodate the needs of the pet. One woman even made alterations to her bed that allowed her ninety pets to share the bed with her.

One situation most pet owners will never experience is the need to fight another animal off to save the life of their pet. Dogs will fight each other from time to time and cats will often do the same. But, for the most part, the fights are relatively even and no serious injuries take place.

No one would expect to be in a position to fight a hawk off of their dog but this is exactly the situation one fifteen-year-old in Las Vegas found herself in recently.

Cecelia Celis was terrified when a red-tailed hawk swooped down to attack her two-pound terrier. She shouted at the hawk in hopes her voice would deter the attack. When yelling at the bird did not work, Cecelia grabbed a pillow that was nearby and attacked the hawk. It took three strong strikes before the hawk released the small dog.

‘We see a huge bird fly up, and I yell at the bird, ‘Get off my dog! Get off my dog!’ Cellis told KSNV.

Attacks like the one witnessed by Cecilia happen more often than most people know. Birds of prey have been responsible for the serious injury and death of dogs and other small animals like squirrels and rabbits.

Fortunately, there are precautions pet owners can take to protect their pets from birds of prey. If you live in an area where birds of prey are prevalent, remain close to small pets when they are outside the home. Also, do not feed your pet outdoors. Feeding time is often when birds of prey attack distracted animals. It is also suggested you do not feed smaller birds in areas where birds of prey frequent. Your actions may attract larger birds to the area.

Cecilia's puppy was quite fortunate to only suffer a few talon marks in the attack.
