Bullying is hardly a new phenomenon. Young people have suffered from the terrible actions of bullies since time began. In recent years, greater attention to the social problems associated with bullying emerged. Some stories about people overcoming bullying prove inspiring.

Justin Stewart, a young man from Elizabeth, NJ, experienced bullying due to a medical issue that disfigured his nose. Other kids made fun of Justin, but the now 19-year-old didn't let bullies get him down. He now enjoys a career as a model, and also enjoys great success.

Justin was born prematurely and was diagnosed with frontonasal dysplasia. The condition affected his nose and created a disfigurement. Justin did not suffer any problems at home, as he lived with a loving family. However, after enrolling in the local school, he suffered mercilessly due to cruel taunts from other children.

Justin told the Metro he felt utter shock at the way kids would tease and insult him. He could not understand why they were so cruel. Often, children possess a lack of empathy, which contributes to bullying behavior. Regardless of the reason, the pain of the insults hurt Justin. And the attacks were relentless.

While Justin admits to feeling "bad" about the teasing, he never let it get him down. The young man got on with his life and pursued his ambitions. Justin also sought cosmetic help for the condition, reports the Metro. After two reconstructive surgeries, doctors made significant changes to Justin's appearance. Even still, Justin noted he had to deal with "mental battles" from the years of abuse.

Career-wise, Justin explored avenues in the modeling industry and caught the attention of We Speak Model Management in New York. Not long after signing with the agency, Justin found himself in demand. He landed prized modeling assignments with top companies, such as Office, Tommy Hilfiger, and Wrangler. When not achieving tremendous success in modeling, Justin attends college and focuses on a communications degree program. Overall, he's doing incredibly well.

Justin's story shows that young people don't have to live in the shadow of bullying. Putting such things in the past while moving towards the future becomes a positive path forward.
