Teen Passengers Wear 13 Pounds Of Clothes To Try To Avoid Airline Excess Baggage Fees

Air travel can be tricky business, particularly if you’re flying with a low-cost carrier, many of which impose strict rules concerning baggage and weight. For those who were frequent flyers, we all know how stressful and grueling it is to check and estimate your baggage at the check-in counter.

In some cases, many passengers are confronted with the decision to swallow their pride and pay those hefty fines and expenses that traveling more than the designated weight costs. Some people think of ingenious ways to avoid those; in the case of one TikTok user Adriana Ocampo, she thought of a way to bring her excess baggage to her destination without paying those fines.

In a TikTok video she posted, Ocampo shared how she and her friend tried to outsmart Jetstar Airlines on their flight from Melbourne to Adelaide in Australia. Upon their initial weigh-in, her baggage was more than 28 pounds instead of their allowable weight of 15 pounds. In an effort to cheat the system, Ocampo and her friend tried to wear their excess clothes.

On their second try, it was still around 17 pounds, so they decided to stuff more items in their bodies. Apart from wearing more trousers, a bundle of shirts, jumpers, and sweaters over another, Ocampo even tried to put her iPad, among other stuff, on her pants, cloaked with an even bigger jacket to hide it.

As they tried to conceal their laughter, the people in the background shot them some dirty looks, presumably irritated by what they were trying to do.

Ocampo tried to wear 13 pounds of clothing in an effort to outsmart their chosen airline’s baggage fine system.

Speaking to South West News Service, Ocampo confessed that they already knew that their luggage was heaping with clothes as she could “barely close” the bag before leaving their hotel.

The two hoped that during the boarding process, they wouldn’t be checking their bag, but unfortunately, the airline pulled out a trolley with a scale, forcing them to do so.

“I looked like a bear. I’m small and petite, but I looked like the exact opposite,” Ocampo told the outlet about their move. Apparently, they were told that they would be charged $65 for the excess baggage, which prompted them to stuff themselves with their things even more.

“Everyone in line was staring at us and laughing at us; it was kind of embarrassing,” she reflected after the mishap.“People were annoyed that we were holding the plane up.”

Eventually, the two gals onboarded the flight but were unsuccessful in their antics to cheat the fine system, as shown in the video

One of Jetstar's spokespersons addressed the issue via a statement to The New York Post.

“While we certainly see the funny side, we have limits to carry-on to make it fair for everyone. Keeping track of how much baggage passengers bring onboard means everyone has room for their belongings and we’re meeting our safety requirements,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, people on social media found the antic funny, with people saying that they would do such a thing too.

“THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN,” a user said.

“Crying in Starbucks over this, this is hilarious,” another happily commented.

“I would do the same 😂😭,” one shared.
