7-year-old Anastasiia Tiurina plays the triangular Russian balalaika leading the entire performance of the National Academic Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments.

Is talent nurtured or natural? This is a controversial topic that keeps sparking every time a talented individual steals the limelight. After elaborate examples such as Beethoven who started composing and performing songs at the tender age of seven and Mozart who quickly took up writing songs at the age of four and had a record of ten symphonies by the time he clocked 12, you may bend towards acknowledging talent as a natural gift.

It occurs spontaneously with the most recent being a 7-year-old Anastasiia Tiurina who shocked the audience after performing a classic Russian folk song named “Valenki.” She stood out being the only child among adults while playing alongside the National Academic Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments.

The performance begins with the orchestra strategically seated in their spots holding their instruments on stage. Anastasiia is honored by sitting in front of the row, seemingly leading the entire performance. In her hands, the 7-year-old holds an instrument of power: a triangular Russian balalaika. She immediately stands out.

The triangular guitar-looking instrument known as the balalaika traces back in the 18th century. It’s structure, and design epitomize the dombra, which is a three-stringed instrument but differs from the balalaika with its round-shaped body. Britannica confirms that both the dombra and balalaika were discovered and widely used in the Russian and Central Asian cultures.

The video documenting Anastasiia’s performance begins as normally with the conductor signaling the orchestra to get ready using his arms and fingers. Anastasiia leads the orchestra into opening tones by playing the balalaika alone for a few seconds. The orchestra joins in with various tones and instruments. You can hear a few string instruments and double reeds immediately followed by well-composed double reed woodwinds. It’s a well-articulated start from Anastasiia and the entire orchestra. This rich and unique Russian orchestra binds its strengths through blending several culturally relevant tools and instruments. The Russia orchestra differs competitively with today’s Western orchestra, which is defined by the use of various types of woodwind instruments and incorporates varying brass.

Anastasiia and the orchestra practiced remarkably well for the “Valenki,” mixing it with harmonious rhythms. There’s a tidy flow of outstanding Russian string instruments and woodwinds that maintain a smooth drift throughout. After the orchestra takes over after Anastasiia’s opening, one solo oboist can be heard dominating with strings and a percussionist that soon rises to mix up with the 7-year-old’s tunes. It’s then time to give the 7-year-old a few seconds of fame, where she does it boldly. After the orchestra tones down the instruments, Anastasiia is left to perform a short solo. She begins with plucking a few bold tones that swiftly change into rapid hams all by herself

Taking away the video, given the musical performance alone, you’d be tempted to think that the performance is from an older and more experienced virtuoso. Her tiny arms pluck the strings on the instrument so skillfully despite being only seven years old. You can see how engaged Anastasiia is as she plays her part in the performance. The rest of the orchestra genuinely supports the young girl as she indulges in her instruments with joy and enthusiasm. You can see her enjoying her performance from her facial expressions.

Towards the end, they all wrap up the performance on a high note where Anastasiia gives a bow to an applauding audience before exiting the stage. You can hear it in your ears as well as from the audience’s applause that the performance of “Valenki” was electrifying. Anastasiia rightfully takes the limelight. She is talented indeed.
