Busker Gets the Surprise of His Life!

Street buskers have to know a lot of different songs to make a living. Busking is a challenging job that requires keeping people happy playing the music they know. It turns out that this Scottish busker perfectly picked the song “Smalltown Boy” by Bronski Beat while playing on a street in Berlin!

As the Busker continues the song, clearly getting into the music, he is joined in a duet by Jimmy Sommerville himself! The busker doesn’t even realize that he is singing with the original 80’s icon himself!

Buskers are a common sight in large European cities like Berlin. You can tell this musician is working the crowd with his shiny blue guitar and a hat for tips in front of him. His audience is dancing along and recording his performance when a man comes by walking a dog. The busker doesn’t seem to think much of it when the man joins in on harmony.

The audience knows what is going on though! They know that this is Jimmy Sommerville singing his original classic. As the audience laughs as they realize that the busker doesn’t know who he is singing with. Sommerville and the Busker have a lovely musician to musician moment where the Busker gives a count off the make sure they are staying together in their impromptu performance.

What a compliment is it to have the original performer of a song join you in the middle of the street of all places! Sommerville is gracious and acts as though he is just another musician, there to share the limelight. There are some clues that the busker knows something is up, but they are both so focused on their performance, they just keep singing!

As if this moment could not get any more lovely, upon ending the song, the busker turns to his duet partner and asks, “Is that you?” Sommerville, laughing, confirms that it is him and shakes the busker’s hand. I am sure that the busker will never forget the day he shared the stage with Jimmy Sommerville!

Everyone comes out of this delightful experience giving us all sorts of joy. The busker being so ready to include a passerby in his music. Sommerville knowing that he can give that busker a memory for a lifetime. The dog who just wanted to get on with his walk. The whole interaction is just wholesome.

Believe it or not, Jimmy Sommerville is 52 in this 2013 video, but he still has the gift! In one interview, he said that he decided to pursue music because he “wanted people to love me.” The 10 million views on this video shows that he has certainly been successful at that! If you want to see the man himself, Sommerville is still performing as a solo artist today.
