Child kidnapping is a horrible crime and one that every parent fears could happen to their child. This fear flashed to mind for one woman during a seemingly innocent encounter in the baby section of a department store.

While Rachel Youngs was shopping in her local Target with her 9-week-old daughter Waverly, she was engaged in conversation by a young woman with a dog. Rachel told WECT TV 6 that the woman seemed to be very friendly, and made a joking comment about wanting to trade her dog for Rachel's daughter.
Unfazed, Rachel continued to talk to the woman and learned that she had a dog grooming business and also did some babysitting on the side. When the woman asked Rachel if she could hold her daughter Waverly, Rachel did not hesitate to hand her little one over to her.

After the woman had Waverly in her arms, she began to say things that made Rachel uncomfortable. First, the woman inquired if Rachel already had a godmother for her daughter. When Rachel replied no, she offered to be Waverly's godmother and "split everything 50/50." The woman then proceeded to casually mention that she had been arrested for attempted kidnapping.

At this point, according to Rachel, the strange woman started walking off with her daughter.
"I yelled to her, I said, ‘I need my baby back, please. Give me my baby back,’” Rachel told WECT TV 6.
Thankfully, the lady then stopped and handed Rachel the baby back. Rachel immediately asked the staff at Target to contact the police. Upon arrival, the police informed Rachel that since she had handed her daughter over willingly, there had been no crime committed. Even so, authorities have identified the woman and are conducting an investigation.
Rachel's story is a reminder to always be cautious when dealing with strangers, especially when your children are involved. Send this story to other parents to remind them to never let their guard down.
