Steve Irwin's Family Has Just Fulfilled One Of His Greatest Wishes

Steve Irwin’s family finally fulfilled one of his greatest wishes. They opened an Elephant hospital in Indonesia, the first-ever in Sumatra. The late Crocodile Hunter’s wife, Terri Irwin along with his daughter Bindi talked about how important it was to keep remembering Steve’s mission. 

Steve Irwin passed away in 2006 after a tragic accident while filming a documentary in Queensland.  He left behind a loving family who in the years after his death continued his conservation work in numerous ways. "I think for us as a family we always want to make sure that his legacy continues," Bindi told Buzzfeed News.

Bindi, her younger brother Robert and Terri just put the final touches on the new elephant hospital. “Dad always said, 'I don't care if people remember me, I care if people remember my message,'" she said.

Terri Irwin told the publication, "We just — just — finished one of his greatest goals which was to open an elephant hospital in Indonesia. In Sumatra, when elephants step on a landmine or they get caught in a snare there was no hospital to treat them, and we now have just opened an elephant hospital, so it's pretty special." She added that these types of projects were things she and Steve talked about saying, “it's so important to continue his mission."

Australia Zoo staffer Luke Reavley said to Buzzfeed, "Steve dreamed of opening an elephant hospital after witnessing first-hand the issues they were facing in the wild." Australia Zoo where the Irwin family works helped fund the project in Indonesia.“ Australia Zoo has sent staff to microchip elephants to better monitor their population,” Reavley said.

Bindi also said the family has created a new business plan for Australia Zoo after they just completed the 10-year business plan Steve had left behind at the time of his death. "We have projects all over the planet about that he was so passionate about that we've continued," Bindi said to Buzzfeed. "Helping rhinos and cheetahs in Africa, tigers in Sumatra — it's so important for us to continue Dad's legacy and what he loved the most, which was wildlife conservation."
