In addition to his many impressive credits in cinema and television, Steve Buscemi also served as a firefighter. Buscemi had many different types of jobs before he became a famous actor. When he was a teenager, he worked for a moving company, pumped gas, sold newspapers and drove an ice cream truck.
When Steve was 18 years old, he took the examination to become a New York City firefighter. He was assigned to duty four years later. He answered emergency calls during the day, and he did acting auditions at night.
He landed an acting role in 1986 in Bill Sherwood's "Parting Glances" for which he arranged a three-month leave of absence from his job, but he never returned to duty at his firefighting job.

His desire to serve as a firefighter called him back when the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred on September 11, 2001. When the need was great for volunteers, Buscemi rejoined the engine company where he had been stationed in the past.
Despite all his vaunted success as a celebrity, Buscemi was not in any way deterred to do rigorous manual labor to help people in a crisis.
Steve worked strenuous 12-hour shifts in the rubble of the twin towers to help search for survivors of the catastrophe. Buscemi was not recognized during the ordeal because he was wearing a mask, and he didn't want to be acknowledged publicly for his actions. It wasn't until ten years later that his heroic actions were made known.
Steve has accomplished many things in the entertainment business. He has succeeded in acting, comedy and film-making.
He was unsure of his path in life when he was young, and he felt like the Hollywood lifestyle was the only thing that made sense to him.
When Steve's father died, he sought the counsel of a psychic to help figure out his direction in life. Steve has told The Guardian that he envisions himself more as a writer than an actor, but he doesn't feel like he has done much in that area to fulfill his potential.
