Back in 1969, the Statler Brothers released their third studio album How Great Thou Art, named after a traditional Swedish tune that appears on the record. In this vintage video, the country quartet covers that fantastic Swedish tune, which dates back all the way to 1885.

Humble Beginnings

Much like their country music career, the Statler Brother’s performance of this traditional Swedish hymn begins rather simply. One brother plays the guitar as the others blend their voices around the accompaniment. The brothers break into frequent smiles at one another and look like they are genuinely taking pride in their singing.

A Heritage Of Hymns

From the start of their career, the Statler Brothers have included a hymn in many of their performances. How Great Thou Art is an oft-requested hymn. It is also the one featured during this performance.

Beautiful Beginning

Although the song begins slowly with just a single acoustic guitar for accompaniment, it is an uplifting performance from the start. When the brothers sing the lyric, “Then sings my soul,” their surrounding changes. So does their accompaniment.

Soaring In Song

At this pivotal moment, the brothers are now backed by a full orchestra and are in the middle of a public performance. As this footage from an earlier time carries the remainder of the hymn, the Statler Brothers appear rejuvenated. The energy, however, is just as focused and buoyant.

Thunderous Applause

The crowd began to clap before the piece was over. It was as if their hearts were full, and goodwill was overflowing through their hands. The Statler Brothers had stirred their hearts, and now it was time for the crowd to express their heartfelt appreciation.
