The state of dysfunctional families will, more often than not, cause a strain among members. A good communication system and enough bonding time often go a long way in fixing the dysfunction. However, when a parent is out of the picture and goes no-contact with their kids, fixing such relationships later in life takes a lot.
In a rather dramatic turn of events, a United Kingdom man with the username ThrowRA-3Months on Reddit narrated how his mother, who had left him years ago, appeared at their doorstep the day before his wedding ceremony.
The Redditor reached out to the AITA Redditors in September 2023, where he sought the opinions of people regarding the issue. The original poster (OP) explained that his mother abandoned their family when he was a child and, after an interval of 17 long years, turned up unannounced the day before his wedding.
Sometimes, life does not go according to how we want it, and this is the situation with the OP and his family. The Redditor started his story by explaining what led to the current situation. He wrote:
"I'm from a Muslim family and I'm based in the UK, when I was 10 years old, my mother abandoned me and my sister as she discovered that she was no longer attracted to men but attracted to women."
The man continued by explaining how his mother had left without saying goodbye to either him or his sister. The only thing his mother had left was "a note to my father saying that she is in love with her girlfriend and that she wishes my father well without giving any consideration to her 4 year old daughter and 10 year old son."
Following his mother's sudden departure, the son was left heartbroken. He revealed further, "When my father told me that my mother left for another women, it made me grow fury towards gay people however I learn't in this life that not everything can go your way and at the end of the day, it was my mother who caused my pain not gay people."
After coming to terms that not everything can go a person's way, the Redditor’s family moved on. His father remarried, and everything looked good. And 17 years down the line, the poster was way into adulthood, ready to walk down the aisle. He noted that his sister was also engaged to be married.
Basically, life was going smoothly for the OP's family. That is until he got the shock of his life when his mother suddenly showed up after so many years. He wrote:
"Until yesterday, I was having about to have dinner at my father estate with my in-laws, my sister and her fiancée and we received a knock on the door and it was a random woman so I said Hi, how can I help you and she stated that she's my mother girlfriend and she asked if we could have a chat. I replied no in an angry tone and shut the door."
The OP's father had asked who that was, and he explained to him that it was the "home wrecker,” in reference to his mom’s lover. He expected his father to be furious, but he was just sad from seeing his mother and her girlfriend "holding hands.” His sister asked why their mom was just coming back after so many years, and the mother explained that she had been in contact with the OP's uncle.

Apparently, the uncle had been keeping his mother updated, and that was how she got to know about her daughter and son's engagement. He continued to write what else happened during the encounter:
"She demanded that she get an invitation, I replied that you abandon your 2 young children for your own needs then you hide in your car and send the home wrecker to try and have a conversation."
The Redditor's mother started crying after he said those words while her girlfriend comforted her. The "home wrecker" explained that the OP's father did not let his mother contact the children while she was away in America. The duo left after the father threatened to call the police, but they left calling the family "homophobic." The man concluded by asking if he had been in the wrong for his actions.
Several people responded to the story. One person commented, "NTA but the LGBTQ isn't necessary in this topic. Wouldn't change the outcome if she left for another men or would it?" Someone else wrote, "NTA. She doesn't have an invitation because she abandoned you, NOT because she's lesbian."
Another mentioned, "NTA Where was she for the last 17 years ? That's a very long time to not be in any contact at all or not even try to contact you." One affirmed, "NTA She made the choice to abandon you and your sister. You don't owe her anything." A person also commented, "I can't say who's the a**hole. But it's worth noting that you only have your father's story and he's made sure that you never heard more."
Although many people affirmed that the OP was not in the wrong, others also had the opinion that the father and the circumstances at the time, considering their religion, might have also contributed to the mother's flight.
