Single Mom With Absolutely No Retirement Plan Builds A Cute Little House To Live In All By Herself

As a single mom with two kids, Michelle “MJ” Boyle recognized that she needed to plan for her retirement. With no savings at all, MJ decided to build a tiny house where she could live comfortably during her retirement years. The tiny house worked out so well that MJ decided to build more of them to rent to others.
MJ has seen her share of difficult times. She went into foster care as a toddler before being adopted as a teenager. She married twice and divorce followed each marriage. The two divorces resulted in the loss of two previous houses she had built. She raised her kids as a single mom for 13 years, living from one pay check to the next and barely making ends meet. But her kids got older and headed off to college.

With her kids gone, MJ began looking forward to retirement. However, with no savings and no real retirement plan of any sort, MJ took a hard look at her situation and she decided to act. She built a tiny house that would be hers and hers alone. It would provide a place for her to live that no one could take away. She even decided to build additional tiny houses that she would rent to others to provide much needed additional income.
Using a combination of cash she raised and product sponsorships, MJ began building her tiny house. She did most of the work herself but received some help from friends and local contractors. The result was a comfortable tiny house measuring 8 ½ feet wide and 24 feet long.
In this video, MJ takes you on a tour of her tiny house. The design theme used throughout is modern nostalgia. The house is both comfortable and functional, utilizing space effectively. MJ is particularly proud of her kitchen. Using refurbished appliances dating back to the late 1940s, MJ demonstrates that even a tiny house can have a fully functional kitchen.
Like most construction projects, the house is not perfect and in the video MJ shares with you some of the mistakes she made in building the house. MJ notes that she made the stairs too narrow and recalls the “challenges” of a single misplaced tile in the kitchen.
Please let us know what you think of the house. And if you think MJ’s story is inspiring, please pass it on.
