If you are a parent, you know just how hard that job can be. Even if you don't have children, you know people who have them. Being a parent is a full-time job that is bittersweet for a lot of families. It can be even more bittersweet if you are parenting alone. According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, only 35% of single mothers over the age of 25 hold a bachelor's degree or higher. The Institute for Women's Policy Research shows that among single mothers in college, 89% have low incomes.
One day a woman named Morgan King, who is a single mother, struggled to find someone to watch her child when she needed it most. King wasn't just a single mom, but she was also a student. Getting her degree from the University of Tennessee, King was busy balancing being a mom while also going to school. King found herself without childcare one day and struggled with what to do. King realized she needed to reach out to her professor about why she would be absent that day from class. Hesitant, King emailed her assistant professor at the Department of Child and Family Studies, Sally Hunter.
To King's surprise, her assistant professor had the response of a lifetime. King was so happy and shocked by her professor's email response that she immediately took to the world wide web. King posted an email screenshot to her personal Twitter page, where the email became an instant hit. With over 24,000 likes, the post was liked by hearts everywhere.
On her Twitter page, King wrote, Told my professor I missed class yesterday because I couldn't find childcare & this was her response. I'm literally crying. So blessed/thankful."
The teacher's response will shock you.
"I am so sorry to hear that childcare issues are what caused you to miss class today," Hunter wrote. "In the future, if you are having trouble finding someone to watch Korbyn, please feel free to just bring her with you to class," Hunter also wrote. The professor went as far as to say that she would love to help care for the child too.
"I would be absolutely delighted to hold her while I teach, so that you can still pay attention to class and take notes. I work for the Department of CHILD and FAMILY Studies– so how terrible would it be, if I was unwilling to have a child visit our class? I'm very serious with this offer– just bring Korbyn with you!" she finished.
King later posted an update to her Twitter on the situation and said, "Update: I walked into class a couple minutes late this morning & my professor said, "awe dang, I thought you were gonna bring Korbyn today."
Overall, this gesture from King's assistant professor was a response that no one was expecting, most of all King herself.
Internet users commented with words like, "My Mom took me to her evening classes at UT when I was a kid and she was a single Mom and student. I'm happy you have so much support!"
The initial tweet of the email response has, in total, over 292 comments, over 5,000 retweets, and over 24,000 likes.
