America's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has been in an accident on an electric bike which caused him to fall off and break part of his back. He underwent a six-hour surgery and is now recovering in the hospital. Doctors stated it was a bad injury but Cowell was lucky.

The incident took place at Cowell's Malibu home as the result of testing out a new electric bike, and Simon's son Eric and his brother Adam were with him at the time of the accident. Cowell's rep told Entertainment Tonight:

"Simon has broken his back in a number of places in a fall from his bike whilst testing a new electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu with his family. He was taken to hospital where they operated overnight (Saturday). He's under observation and is doing fine."

Apparently undergoing a number of procedures and fusions, as well as having a metal rod inserted in his back, doctors said that the injury was bad but that Cowell was very lucky. Cowell took to Twitter to comment on the accident and offered some sage advice at his own expense, writing:

"Some good advice...If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages."

He followed the tweet with a thank you to the medical staff who had been looking after him and told everyone to stay safe.

The AGT judge was expected to appear in upcoming live telecasts of the show this week, but now will not be as he recovers. Sofia Vergara, a new host to the show, posted a photo to Instagram of herself and the other two judges—Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel—and wrote: "We miss our boss!! Come back fast @simoncowell!!🚑 🚑"

In recent months Cowell had been in quarantine with his family and had discussed how he and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman were handling the coronavirus pandemic with their six-year-old son Eric. As reported by ET, he said:

"We never have the news playing in the house, number one. So whatever we need to talk about, you know, we shield it. We keep him away from this because at six years old, you know, look—it's hard for all of us. But for someone that age, for any parent, I think we'd all feel the same way. You try and protect your kids through this process. But I mean, having this time with him and seeing that he's still getting schooled, etcetera, I said this many times, we're all in this together."

He followed this in the same interview by discussing his appreciation and respect for those working on the front lines, adding:

"And you know, the appreciation for the people out there who are risking their lives on the front line. You know, that's where your thoughts go. I mean, it is quite remarkable."

We wish Simon a quick recovery and for him to be safe at home soon.
