Samuel L Jackson Commemorates 40th Anniversary With Wife LaTanya Richardson: 'We Moved As One'

This Wednesday, award-winning actor Samuel L. Jackson celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary with wife LaTanya Richardson. And in a heartwarming post to his Instagram account this week, Jackson paid tribute to Richardson and their decades-long marriage.

Stable, long-lasting relationships in Hollywood are a rare occurrence. Not only do Hollywood couples have to endure the strains of any normal relationship, but they also have to deal with being constantly in the spotlight. But despite those added pressures, Samuel L. Jackson and his wife LaTanya Richardson are still going strong. Jackson’s most recent anniversary message, which he posted alongside a photo of himself and Richardson, is a testament to their exceptional marriage.

“50 years ago we started dancing, it was all fun & games,” Jackson wrote to his more than 6 million followers.

“The slow drag of our lives pressed together, I led sometimes, sometimes she did. We finally found that rhythm where there was no leader, we moved as one. We’re still glued together, hip to hip, a [sic] holding each other up, not covering as much of the floor, but owning & loving the space that’s ours. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY @ltjackson_ Love 💕 .”

While attending college at Morehouse in the 1960s, Jackson and his wife met for the first time in Atlanta, according to ShowBiz CheatSheet. Richardson, a student at neighboring Spelman College, studied theater while Jackson was a marine biology and architecture student. However, the two were separated after Jackson, who was active in the civil rights and black power movements, got expelled for protesting Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1969, as ShowBiz CheatSheet explains.

Eventually, however, Jackson re-enrolled at Morehouse, and the two got back together after two years of separation. And now, decades later, Jackson and Richardson are married, celebrating 40 years together.

“Love 💕 You for keeping me on my toes & on the beat for 18,250 days. You make my soul 🎶 sing‼️ Don’t change the tune, we’re not done dancing🖤🖤🖤🖤💗,” Jackson wrote to conclude his anniversary tribute.

Back in 2018, following Jackson’s 70th birthday, Richardson also opened up to the public, speaking to reporters at Essence regarding her marriage to the award-winning actor. When asked what keeps their marriage together, Richardson explained that faith plays a large role.

“You have to have a big heart and the Lord. You can’t do this without the Lord. You’re going to have to turn to somebody, something — because men, they are different,” Richardson told Essence in 2018. “They’re cut from a different cloth.”

The actress added that she and her husband also had one important thing in common that held the family together.

“I’m telling you, we were revolutionaries,” she said of herself and Jackson. “We used to say the most revolutionary thing was to keep a Black family together. So that became our mantra.”

After 40 years together, Jackson and Richardson have built quite a life together. Beyond their combined professional achievements, which include countless awards and film appearances, the inspirational pair also has a 38-year-old daughter, Zoe Jackson, who followed in her parent's footsteps by working in show business.
