In Hollywood, few sibling duos have left as lasting a mark as Ron and Clint Howard. Ron, a former child star turned Oscar-winning director, and Clint, a character actor with a decades-long career, have each carved out unique paths in the entertainment industry.
Their bond extends beyond family, as Ron has cast Clint in numerous films throughout his directing career, showcasing brotherly love and a deep mutual respect for each other’s craft. Clint has appeared in 17 of Ron’s films, including “Grand Theft Auto” (1977), “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000), and “Apollo 13” (1995), often bringing heart and depth to his supporting roles.
Ron is incredibly proud of his younger brother Clint’s performance on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” where Clint took on the role of a homeless man named Tom. The 71-year-old “Happy Days” alum and filmmaker called it “not surprising” that Clint, 65, was tapped for a guest run on the globally popular drama series.
Reflecting on his own role in the soap opera, Clint shared with PEOPLE: “You’re handed a lot of scenes to do, and you’d better be prepared.”
He added: “I was taught by both my mom and dad, Rance and Jean Howard, since I was a little kid that my primary responsibility is to be prepared to show up to work, even as a very young child.… And then knowing that in soap operas, it’s possible to get handed boatloads of dialogue, and you’ve got to learn it. You’ve got to understand it. You’ve got to be able to deliver it. You’ve got to be light on your feet.”

In a 2021 appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Clint opened up about the unique experience of working closely with his older brother, Ron, as they promoted their memoir “The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family.” The book offered a glimpse into their lives growing up in show business, shaped by their parent’s wisdom and the shared journey of two brothers navigating fame and family.
Clint reflected on the lessons he learned while working under Ron’s direction.
“I learned my lesson early on,” he said, adding, “I was probably in... my early 20s, and yet I had to learn that ultimately, he’s the boss. He’s making the decisions.”
Despite the professional hierarchy, Clint emphasized their close bond:
“I love my brother. He’s a great older brother. He’s a hall-of-fame movie director, and he’s a better big brother than he is a movie director.”
Ron, always full of admiration for Clint, shared his thoughts with PEOPLE:
“He is a great character actor and so recognizable, and so people are always excited when he shows up in something. ... I think he went in to do one episode on the series and they wound up, he wound up with a character run. He’s inventive, he’s unique, and he is a talented guy.”
As the executive producer of the documentary series “Fight for Glory: World Series 2024,” Ron praised Clint’s professionalism:
“He’s great to work with. He has just seen it all, done it all.” He added, “He’s a pro, and he contributes. Every time I have had a chance to cast him in something meaningful, I never forced him in there. But every time I can cast Clint, I know that’s one character I won’t have to worry about.”
Not to mention that their sibling dynamic brings levity to the set.
“I’ll have some laughs standing around in between setups,” Ron said. “He does not hold his tongue around his big brother, which is very welcome by all.”
