Roger Moore’s Son Geoffrey Says A Female James Bond ‘Wouldn’t Be The Same’

Special Agent 007 — better known as James Bond — is perhaps one of the most famous characters in film history, and the many actors who've played the iconic role have become icons in their own right. The likes of Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and most recently, Daniel Craig, are just some of the actors who've starred in the franchise, and all of them have achieved great fame and acclaim in their respective careers.

After starring in the five most recent Bond films, Craig has undoubtedly become a household name around the world. Though he's starred in other movies throughout his career, his most well-known role is, of course, playing special agent James Bond. It is a prestigious role indeed, and Craig has done the role great justice as well. 

Craig has openly talked about no longer continuing in the role, which has led to discussion and multiple reports that a woman may take over the role instead of a man. This has gained traction in the last few years, especially in light of the #MeToo movement that brought forward past actresses from the franchise who experienced sexism on set. Among those who spoke out were "Die Another Day" actress Halle Berry, as well as producer Barbara Broccoli, according to ELLE.

Former actors who've played Bond have even weighed in on whether they think a woman should take on the iconic role next, including Brosnan and Craig, who happen to have differing views on the matter. 

While Roger passed away in 2017, his son, Geoffrey Moore weighed in with his thoughts in March 2023, and he's firmly in the camp that women should not play the legendary special agent.

The last Bond movie in the franchise, "No Time To Die" was released in September 2021 and starred Craig as James Bond, in his fifth time in the role. While the actor made it clear that he would not reprise the character, he became emotional about leaving this chapter of his life behind. Craig told GQ about the speech he made after filming his final scene: "I had a whole thing kind of put together in my head that I wanted to say. I couldn’t get it out." 

Naturally, there was a lot of speculation about who would take on the role next, and Craig didn't hold back on his thoughts. In an interview with Radio Times, he admitted he doesn't think a woman should play Bond, but only because they "deserve their own parts that are just as good." He elaborated:

"There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color." 

He went on to ask, "Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?" This seems to be a good question to ask when it comes to casting the next actor as Bond. 

However, another favorite actor who played Bond, Brosnan, showed support for a female Bond in 2019. He said, "I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years," according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

"Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting," he added.

Now, Geoffrey, the son of Roger, has spoken out on the subject and he believes women shouldn't play Bond. In an interview with Express in March 2023, Geoffrey was asked if the role could be played by a woman and replied:

"Well, then it's no longer James Bond. I mean, she could be 006, 008, or 009…"

“It wouldn't be the same because it’s Bond. It’s Fleming’s Bond. It’s a guy, unfortunately,” he added. Geoffrey also commented on a possibly confusing moment in the most recent film where actress Lashana Lynch's character Nomi was given the 007 code name after Craig's Bond went off-grid and left MI6.

"In the last Bond I think this was the confusion. That she (Nomi) was 007 and then said, 'I've got to give it back to Bond. It's his number.'"

He added, "Maybe there will be a 'From the filmmakers of James Bond comes Jane or Jemima Bond' or whatever." 

Meanwhile, Lynch gave her input on the topic back in 2021, in an interview with The Guardian:

'With Bond, it could be a man or woman. They could be white, black, Asian, mixed race. They could be young or old. At the end of the day, even if a two-year-old was playing Bond, everyone would flock to the cinema to see what this two-year-old’s gonna do, no?'

Among the top contenders to play Bond next are Idris Elba, 50, Tom Hardy, 45, and Henry Cavill, 39, however, a new frontrunner has emerged — 32-year-old Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who's had a big couple of years in Hollywood, with roles in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Tenet" and "Bullet Train," as well as the 2010 superhero flick "Kick-Ass." Daisy May Cooper is also rumored to be in the running to play M.

For now, we'll just have to wait and see who'll fill Bond's suave suit next.
