Rod Stewart Opens Up About Reconnecting With Child He Gave Up For Adoption At 17 When He Was ‘Stone Broke’

Rod Stewart is one of the most famous faces in rock music and was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice. His raspy, wonderful voice has been known to be “one of the finest voices of his generation.” Away from the limelight, the rock icon is a family man. He has been married three times and is a father of eight children, whom he shares with five women. Rod’s experience of fatherhood is particularly unique since the ages of his children span from 13 to 60, and the “Faces” lead vocalist has spoken out about having to be “several different fathers” as a result of their wide age gaps.

“You really have to treat all of them as individuals with individual problems,” he said. “As a dad, I’ve learned to listen and not blow my top.”

He and his ex-wife Alana Stewart, an American former actress and model, welcomed their daughter, Kimberly Stewart, in 1979. Rod and Alana also had a son, Sean Stewart, before separating in 1984. Kimberly is a celebrity in her own right, known for her work in fashion and as a celebrity closet organizer. She has also dabbled in acting, while Sean has starred in a few reality shows. 

Rod’s other children include singer and model Ruby Stewart, artist and yoga teacher Renee Stewart, and professional ice hockey player Liam Stewart. Rod is married to Penny Lancaster, with whom he shares his youngest children, model Alastair Stewart and Aiden Stewart.

Unbeknownst to many, Rod’s first child was a daughter he and a former partner put up for adoption in 1963. Then only 17, Rod got his girlfriend, art student Susannah Boffey, unexpectedly pregnant. Lacking financial stability and any support from their families, they made the difficult decision to place their daughter, Sarah Streeter, up for adoption.

“She was put up for adoption when I was 17 or 18,” Rod recalled. “I was absolutely stone broke and didn’t have a pot to piss in… and so she was put up for adoption.”

Streeter stayed in foster care until a couple named Evelyn and Gerald Thubron adopted her at age 5. She only discovered that Rod was her biological father when she was 18 years old, but it was decades before the pair reconnected as their estrangement deeply hurt Streeter, 60. She and Rod only reconciled after she lost her adoptive parents and have since become closer. 

The rocker shared that he and Streeter are now making up for lost time and getting to know each other.

“Since her mum and dad have died, we’ve tried to come together and be close together, and it’s working out pretty well. I never felt like I was her dad, because I didn’t take her to school, change her nappies, there was no paternal thing there, but I’m trying.” 

Streeter also opened up about her relationship with her famous father, revealing that things are improving.

“Our relationship has evolved a lot in the last few years. It’s taken its time because he’s not just my dad, is he? He’s a big star. So, of course, that makes it difficult. But over the years it has become much more relaxed and now he’s just Dad to me.”
