Rocker Gene Simmons Slammed By 'Dancing With The Stars' Fans After 'Very Weird & Creepy' Comments As Guest Judge

Fans were left disappointed with an episode of ABC’s dance competition show, “Dancing With The Stars” (DWTS). The episode featured a guest judge who managed to cause outrage across the show’s fanbase with his offensive remarks, as well as a disappointing ending with one of the season’s fan-favorite couples being eliminated. Here’s what happened in the controversial episode. 

The theme for the episode of “DWTS” was Hair Metal Night, and fans were excited when the show revealed that Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Gene Simmons would be the guest judge. The rocker, most famous for being one of the lead singers of the hard rock band Kiss, was expected to bring an edgy energy to the night. The remaining contestants were also eager to maintain their spots on the season’s roster by avoiding elimination and impressing Simmons and the other judges. 

Unfortunately, the rock legend left fans offended by his comments on each of the performances. Many fans and viewers of the show felt that he had missed the mark and his comments had little value to add. Why? Well, Simmons seemed determined to comment on everything but the routines showcased on the dance floor. 

Instead, Simmons focused on making comments about the looks and physical appearance of the contestants, which some labeled "very weird and creepy." Fans immediately took to social media to express their disapproval of his bad conduct, which took away from the overall essence of the episode. A TikTok user shared a video of judge Derek Hough providing constructive feedback to Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong, followed by Simmons’ opinion, which many thought did not make sense. In the video, Simmons seemed to put the actual dancing into the background of the performance, as he told Kinney:

"You moved me, not just with your gyrations and so on, but your beautiful face and how you were into the emotion of it — top to bottom."

He barely acknowledged Armstrong, as he added Kinney had “a bright future” ahead of her. He carried his compliments for the contestants’ looks onto the next couple, Danny Amendola and Witney Carson. After their stellar performance, Simmons had this to say:

"You know this is a brand new experience for me, and it's difficult to look at both of you and to figure out which one is more hot, hot, hot."

Many of his comments about the female contestants focused on their beauty and nothing more. Fans were quick to slam him for his sexist behavior on social media. One fan on X reminded him of the whole point of the show. 

“hey gene! just wanna remind you that this is a dancing show, NOT a beauty contest. respectfully never come back pls and thank you #DWTS,” they wrote. 

Another user thought that Simmons had ruined the show with his comments. 

"Absolutely atrocious. Creepy and ruined tonight for me," they criticized.

The overall takeaway from the show was that the fans would not want Simmons to return. His feedback lacked any solid use for the contestants. One fan summarized the reasons for the backlash against Simmons:

"Worst guest judge! ... His scores were based on physical appearance alone, not skill or talent. Terrible choice DWTS. He should not be allowed to judge again!" they declared.

Only time will tell if future guest judges of the show will do better.
