The film, which received great reviews, is based on a novel by Charles Brandt about the mysterious disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, played by Pacino in the film. Despite the advancing ages of the men, their performances in the film were highly charged and emotional.
De Niro and Pacino had not appeared in the same scene together since the 1995 film "Heat," but it only lasted for a few short moments. The two went on to make many great films separately since then.
As the pair sat together in a GQ interview talking about their friendship and their careers, they relaxed like two old friends. Pacino describes "The Irishman" as a way for Scorsese to vent his inner feelings in a subtle way. He believes that the movie is about the two actors in the sense that they are coming to an end of an epic story. It's also a quizzical look at the nature of people and what they are really after in life.
De Niro revealed that he talked Joe Pesci into joining the production, saying that it could be his last chance to take part in something of this importance. The actors cling to hope that these types of opportunities could come again in the future, but one has to acknowledge that time is limited.
Pacino said that he never considered that this movie could be the last time he could take part in a Scorsese production with De Niro. He pointed out that other people don't tend to think in fatalistic terms, and he doesn't either. De Niro agreed with him on that point.
The events of the film took place during a time when the actors were younger. Pacino said that he didn't think of his experience with the new film as a period piece about his own earlier life. De Niro found that point of view amusing.
Pacino remarked that it's rude to ask him about his age because it's like asking how soon he will die. He pointed out that he doesn't think about how old other people are. Pacino also joked that he can't lie about his age because it's common knowledge, and it's often revealed on the news when he has a birthday.
When asked if he seeks out films about men coming to the end of their lives, Pacino explained that he doesn't necessarily seek out those roles, but he finds that they hold a certain appeal that they didn't have before.
When he was younger, he didn't understand the characters as well as he does now, and it sparks an interest in him to to take on the roles. He gave an example of "King Lear" as one that he is considering as a possibility.
Pacino had a couple of periods in his career when he didn't work. De Niro, on the other hand, acknowledged that his acting work has continued virtually without breaks. Pacino revealed that the times when he didn't work, he was in some financial trouble. De Niro laughed as he indicated he knew about Pacino's difficulties.
The actors reminisced about their friendship over the years. Pacino tried to recall how long they had known each other, and De Niro stated that it had been over 40 years. Pacino described his impression of De Niro the first time he saw him.
