Ricky Martin has lived in the glamour of the international spotlight ever since modern pop culture could remember. The Puerto Rican superstar can sing, dance and act at the same time, making him one of the biggest stars in the world in the '90s.
Known for his extensive versatility, Martin can thread through various genres of music, including Latin pop, pop, dance, reggaeton and salsa, among many others. Because of his innate talent and undeniable charm, Martin has long been hailed as the "King of Latin Pop," the "King of Latin Music" and the "Latin Pop God" by many international publications and magazines.
Martin has been in the entertainment industry since he was 9 years old, appearing in various commercial advertisements on television. But it was when he was 12 that the trajectory of his life changed forever after he joined Menudo, one of the biggest boy bands of all time.
After spending five years in the group, Martin, who had established himself as a teen heartthrob at the time, pursued his solo music career. His third album, “A Medio Vivir,” launched him to European stardom, which was then cemented by his fourth album, “Vuelve” – earning him his very first Grammy Award and a standing ovation at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards at the time.
His success, attributed to the release of his first English album and “Livin’ La Vida Loca” has been widely credited for launching Latin pop to mainstream music, hence his instrumental contribution to Latin music and music in general.
However, Martin’s life in the spotlight wasn’t only sunshine, he also had to shroud an important part of himself to the public because of the scrutiny he feared would take over and largely affect his life.
Martin was widely considered to be one of the most attractive men in the whole world, thanks to his authentic Latino looks, charisma and oozing sex appeal. Apart from his voice and charm, Martin established himself as a pop icon and a worldwide sex symbol. Because of this, everyone was very interested in his love life, as he was the most eligible bachelor on the planet at the time.
The “Maria” hitmaker had been linked to many women in the past. Among the women that Martin dated were Mexican singer Alejandra Guzmán, Gabriela Sabatini, Alessandra Ambrosio and Ines Misan, among others. But perhaps the most notable relationship he had was with Mexican host Rebecca de Alba.
De Alba and Martin’s relationship was a rollercoaster ride, which sadly included a pregnancy loss. Eventually, they parted ways and Martin decided to become a single dad at 37 years old. With the help of science, in 2008, Martin's twins, Matteo and Valentino, were born via gestational surrogacy.
Then two years later, Martin made an announcement that shocked his millions of fans worldwide. After hiding his true sexuality for years, Martin came out of the closet via a message on his website:
"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."
Speaking to GQ Australia in 2013 more about his sexuality, Martin admitted that he had bullied gay people in the past in an effort to make his homosexual feelings go away. In his memoir, “Me” Martin even thought that "something bad, something truly terrible would happen” if he would come out as gay then.
However, it was only six years after he revealed his true self that Martin met the love of his life.

In 2016, rumors that Martin had a boyfriend emerged when Swedish-Syrian painter Jwan Yosef posted a masked photo of him and Martin hanging out. Weeks after, the music icon confirmed their relationship as they made their first public appearance together at the 2016 amfAR Inspiration Gala.
In November of that same year, Martin confirmed on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that he had already proposed to Yosef and they were engaged. In 2018, when Martin spoke to Entertainment News Online, during the red carpet premiere of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, he admitted that they had already tied the knot.
"We exchanged vows, and we've swear (sic) everything, and we've signed all the papers that we needed to sign, prenups and everything,” he told the outlet. "It feels amazing! I can't introduce him as my fiancé. I can't. He's my husband. He's my man."
Yosef and Martin have been busy raising their two children, Matteo and Valentino, as they enjoy moments as a family and switch living between New York, Puerto Rico and the West Coast.
"Our kids are stable when we are together. Wherever we happen to be, that's home,” Martin told Architectural Digest.
The last day of 2018 was very good to Martin and Yosef, as they welcomed their third child and first daughter, Lucia Martin-Yosef. In October 2019, the couple added another addition to their growing family, their third son and fourth child, Renn Martin-Yosef.
Surely, despite the hardships that Martin had to go through when he was younger, wrestling with his sexuality, it was very well worth it now that he is married to the man he truly loves with the blessing of four beautiful children.
